Just how much does weight affect distance. I actually seem to hit irons with heavier weight shafts like dynamic gold farther, should I consider heavier weight graphite shafts for my hybrids and woods? Maybe that is why I hit my old 7wd so well? Starting to look for new irons and want to make sure I understand the trade offs when I get fitted. I am particularly interested in rifle and rifle flighted shafts for irons and aldila NVS in irons and woods? My friends think that the rifles with a forged cavity back would be soft enough that I could go back to steel in my irons (chronic tendinitis). I am getting longer at almost 51 to my suprise. I have gone from a 100 yard carry with my 9 iron to about 115, 125 to 140 with a 7, 5 iron 160.

When I was observing some fittings for an article (back when the 735.CM was coming out), I tried the lighter weight shaft. I hit the ball a little farther on sweet-spot hits, but overall, averaged less distance because my contact was all over the face. My swing (or whatever) was better with a heavier shaft. I could feel the head more and the heavier weight helped "smooth out" some small little bumps or hiccups in my swing (I guess). My contact was all over the face with the lighter weight steel shaft, but almost all dead center with the DG S300.

The Rifles do feel a bit softer than the DGs, but I don't know that they'll feel like graphite for you.

I think lighter graphite shafts should increase your swing speed and give you more distance which they do for most everyone. Why doesn't everyone use them in their irons, then? Because the distance comes at a cost of accuracy in distance and dispersion. Most folks would rather hit their irons an certain direction and distance and add another club if needed. A nine iron should be fairly precise. For players who need distance across the board, graphite makes a lot sense.

    • What's the rest of that story? Where was the ball going?
    • The criticisms are starting already 🤣 U.S. Open pro criticizes Shinnecock green conditions: 'Bumpy' After playing his first practice round at the 2026 U.S. Open, Michael Kim offered a less-than-glowing review of Shinnecock's "bumpy" greens.   The sand, I don't care about that. If the greens didn't come back as well for latest aerification, that would be a bit of a blunder on Shinnecock I think.
    • Well, if your frame of reference spins twice during the swing, then Bryson's ab/adduction is more like 780 degrees so there! (Yes I'm being silly, but not sure it's any sillier than what your pal Andy is doing...)
    • Update: Brandon Sorsby has decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. He will not play for Texas Tech in the upcoming season.  From my perspective, I think he did the right thing. I hope he gets the correct help for his gambling addiction. I say the right thing, because I would be worried that the stress from all of this now and throughout the entire year would not be beneficial towards his mental health.  If an NFL team picks him up, then there really isn't any pressure for him to play immediately. He can work on himself and his game for the NFL.  From Texas Tech,  "Texas Tech will continue to provide the support and recovery resources Brendan requires on this journey. Furthermore, Texas Tech will not seek return of any amounts already paid to Brendan through his NIL agreements with the University," Campbell wrote. "We wish our best to Brendan, and we offer our prayers to him and his family as he chases his dreams at the next level. This has been an unbelievably painful experience for us all, but I know that his true, underlying character and lessons learned through this experience will ultimately bring him great success on the field of play and in life." Which, I also the right thing to do.
