Hey guys,

I'm planning on shortening my clubs by 1 1/2 inch because:

1) they're too long for me
2) I can't bend the lie angle because the club will break, so shortening the club will effectively flaten my lie angle, which I need.

Just wondering if this is my best coarse of action, and if there is some other type of tape I can use that will get the job done instead of lead tape?

Thanks.

Hey guys,

Have you taken them to a clubsmith?

I just had my clubs shortened and had the lie adjusted.

Yes, he couldn't say the clubs would break or not because they are not forged....so I didn't get anything done as I already know how to shorten a golf club the right way.

I read that shortening the club will effectively flatten the lie angle, but I dont have any lead tape so I don't want to shorten it quite yet - that's why I wanted an alternative to the lead tape to use.

I am sure you probably know this but I'll mention it anyway. Shortening the clubs will also change the swing weight and an 1 1/2' is an awful lot. You might find a club you don't use or buy a junk one from the used club bin and try this first. But again an inch and a half is sure a lot of length to add or take off a club design and to make if fee the same (same swing weight) you'll need to add weight to the club head somehow.

Which is why he was inquiring about the lead tape/alternatives to lead tape. Paradirr's suggestion of powder and/or weights would be the most stealthy route as it will not affect the appearance of your clubs like unsightly tape would, if you care about such things. You could also go with a lighter shaft as well to help balance the weight distribution. And...trimming the butt end with have a negligible effect on the flex or kickpoint, not nearly as much as tip trimming will anyway.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think it's possible to shorten bubble shafts 1 1/2 inches. I don't think you can trim the butt end that much, and to cut 1 1/2 off the tip would put the flex off the charts.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
