Anyone played this course? What are your opinions?

Going out to PHX soon, I've played numerous courses in Arizona but never this one. Looks like the other Tonto Verde and Vista Verde are overseeding.

It was okay but our whole group thought Vista Verde was a LOT better. That was a few years ago...not sure if they've built the subdivision around it yet.

Played it on Saturday. Well maintained course with great views. $44 per person (incl cart). Fast greens with subtle breaks. The course borders native Indian land, so there are amazing views of the mountains north of Fountain Hills.

The only negatives were that the finishing hole was one of the weaker far 4s on the course, and we were behind two slow foursomes, so the round took 4 hrs 40 minutes.

Vista Verde, Tonto Verde Peaks, and both Rio Verde courses were all overseeding. The consensus, as you mentioned, is that Vista Verde is the best course, followed by Tonto Verde Ranch.

Also played Legend Trail. Nice course, very target golf style lay out.

My favorites in the PHX area are the We-Ko-Pa and Gold Canyon courses. Both We-Ko-Pa courses were overseeding.

We get down to Phoenix/Scottsdale every other year or so...just can't beat it. My favorite so far has to be Troon North....hope to play We-Ko-Pa next visit though.

Have they started putting homes up around Vista Verde yet?

Didn't see much of the Vista Verde course, but if there weren't any houses on it last time you played there, don't think there would be any new homes on it now. There haven't been any new developments in the PHX area for the past three years. PHX way overbuilt. There is a glut of empty never occupied and foreclosed homes all around town, especially in the suburbs. You could get an absolute steal on a house in Fountain Hills or the Rio Verde neighborhoods, it's a real buyers market there right now.

I played Verde Visa yesterday.  It is in good condition and a great layout.  Has several tee boxes for any skill level.  Greens are difficult to read, at least for me and pin positions were difficult.  But I recommend the course.  There are not many houses built here yet and none near the course. But the drawback is no amenities except the practice range, the good news was it was $36 green fees.  I doubt you'll find a better value for golf in this area at this time.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
