Rivertowne or links at Stono Ferry? Both nice from what I've heard. I'll be there over thanksgiving and might only have time for one round. Which one would you choose? Thanks.

Depends. Where are you staying?

If you are East Cooper (Mt. Pleasant area) then Rivertowne is much closer. If you are West Ashley then Stono Ferry is much closer. Staying downtown is a toss-up.

Rivertowne is a little longer and a little more expensive. Stono Ferry's greens are fantastic right now, IMO. I happen to play there a lot.

They overseeded Stono last week and likely did at Rivertowne. Overseeding usually means cartpath only for a few days following.....ask them at Rivertowne.

Staying downtown. I'm going over thanksgiving so hopefully overseeding won't be an issue. Rivertowne seems really nice, which is your favorite? Or is there a better one in that price range I'm missing out on?

Not exactly responsive to your question, but it is worth the short drive to Kiawah to play the Ocean Course.

I'm sure it's great, but Kiawah is guests only, the total price with hotel and golf is too much for me.

I'm biased as I belong to Stono. Both are nice. Stono has great views/great greens/better price. Rivertowne has good greens/longer-more challenging overall course and higher price. Can't go wrong with either one. Maybe better to get a non-biased opinion.

I played Rivertowne a few times now, and really enjoyed it. The back nine especially, being from Georgia, I dont get the chance to play holes surrounded by the marshes very often. It was a fun course, Although I dont know what it cost because I did not have pay for the round.

Never played Rivertowne, but playes Stono Ferry this past Thursday. I highly recommend it. Great shape and fun to play. Some very scenic holes along the river on the back nine. Friendly staff.

I have plyed the Ocean course twice in the last three years, most recently in early September and I certainly don't recall them ever asking me if I was staying on the property (I was actually staying on Isle of Palms at Wild Dunes which was nice). If there is some kind of rule about staying there, they never mentioned it and did not enforce it.

Ok I found out kiawah is public, and Oak Point is at the top of my budget at $140. I know it's the least acclaimed of the kiawah courses, but is it still worth it? Or at that point am I better off playing a nice Charleston course for half the price? Has anyone played Oak Point and how is it?

My trip is coming up next week. Thanks everyone.

Just seeing this thread. You may have already left but if not, I would play other places than Oak Point that are just as good or better at a better rate. Oak Point is a good course but Stono Ferry is just as good IMO or better. $140 sounds really high for Oak but I haven't played it in 2-3 years. Stono Ferry, Rivertowne, Dunes West, and Patriots Point should be less than half of that rate. I would go with one of them.

Played oak point and I have to say it was worth every penny. Great layout, great conditions, beautiful setting. In fact the whole of johns island was worth the trip, what a beautiful place. It's probably unfortunte it gets overlooked for the other kiawah courses. Also played shadowmoss which was average at best, nowhere near in the same class but the price was right.

All in all SC is a beautiful state, you guys that live there have it good!

    • It isn't about maintaining focus 100% of the time when you are on the course. It is getting focus back for the shot at hand. Even PGA tour players will chat with their caddies or opponents about non-golf stuff, but then lock in. It is hard to try to constantly be 100% locked in for 4+ hours.  Totally normal thing to happen. You really only need a few moments of focus.  This is where a pre-shot routine helps. Maybe you need to add something that gets the focus back.  I just focus on every shot like a puzzle that needs solved. I like solving puzzle and problems. So, I try to be curious. Which then enhances focus. I think it lets me take each shot at hand. It lets me have the down time between shots. What I do is just get to the ball, and then start gathering information. Yardage, lie, wind, where is the pin at, etc.. Then I figure out what I want to do.  It's not like I can't shut off the thoughts and focus when I need to. I only need to focus for a few minutes before each shot.
