Looking to send about 300-450 on new irons. I am about a 25hc maybe less I don't really keep track, and I am using Ping eye's right now.

I was thinking about just purchasing some Ping eye 2's and maybe a Sun Mountain 5 four bag. Any other ideas out there?

There are plenty of great sets out there new and used that can be had for your price range. I would name em all but you would have a lot of picking to do on your end so I will suggest what others will say.. Go to a Golfsmith or any golf store and just look around or ask them for sets in your price range and perhaps get fitted for your irons, it will save you time and money in the long run; I know. I went through hitting 5 or 6 different clubs before getting the Taylormade Tour Burners, then switched to the clubs I have now and it made a world of difference.

I have been thinking about getting out and getting fitted but a lot of the places around here dont sell used sets, and I have been thinking about getting used because I can get more for my buck...

Again going to suggest the same two irons, Nike VR Split Cavity and Callaway X-forged 09 irons. Those two I believe are two best deals out there. Also, you can't go wrong with Mizuno irons from "timtheputterman" on eBay.

I need something with a little forgiveness because it dont always hit the ball clean... Are the callaways x forged blades? I have read that they are hard to hit..

I don't always hit the ball clean and the Nike's do just fine. Neither are blades. If you want something a bit more forgiving, I'd say go with the Adams A7 iron set which come with awesome 3 and 4 hybrid. This set is right within your budget at $400.

Try the Cleveland XLi' HiBores. I'm an 18 and am definitely seeing an improvement in my iron play. I have just gotten them and finally got into the middle 80's last week. First time. This includes my bad driver strokes.

I would suggest a set of Callaway X-22's or 20's. They are good irons that have decent forgiveness and look and feel great.

I've got the ping eye-2's right now... nice iron with pretty good feel even if they are a couple of years old

Couple years? Try couple decades and then some.

I will second the Nike VR split cavities. Some forgiveness there and if you hit a shot bad you will know why.

3 hybrid - Burner hybrid

I had a set of Callway x-18r's that I picked up pretty cheap (I think I payed around $280 brand new).

I sold them not too long ago, but I really liked those clubs. Callaway makes a great iron, I don't think they look very good, though.

I have made it fairly clear over the past year or so that I love Maltby equipment. Every club in my bag is a Maltby and I really believe that his iron heads are as good as any out there. If I were in your position I would look at some of the Club Paks Maltby sells. They will assemble each set exactly to your specs for $40. Here are a few you might benefit from:

I gave my bother in law a set of Maltby Distance Master (the value line from Maltby) irons last year. He loves them. You can also look at some of the forged offerings from Maltby as well. Headlines are that you can have a brand new set of excellent irons for a hair over $220.

I would imagine that the Nike VR's have more forgiveness than my Ping eyes right now. Is there a difference between the regular or the forged? Is it worth the price difference for the forged?

I think you have to ask yuoself a few questions.

How long will I keep these? Do I plan on really trying to improve my game?

If you plan on keeping them a while, I would look at a set of used Ping's like the i2's or i3's for around $200. Pings are a cast club, that will last and they have alsways made a quality product. Then take the other $300 you would have spent and go get lessons.

If you are looking to get a new set of game impovement irons, I cant really help there.

Cast vs. Forged. Forged usually have a much softer feel to them. They generally are more expensive and more of a "gamer" iron. They are also more suseptable to knicks and bag chatter

You can also get a used set bent to your specs for ~ $50. How much does that cost for an old set of PINGs?

Either way he probably has to factor in getting them regripped.

I was looking at the Ping G10's but those are just out of the price range. Maybe I can find a nice used set on Ebay but I hate doing that because I dont want to buy a clone set...

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
