Attended my 2nd live tournament on the wkend (JB were masters) and the thing that stood out for me, apart from the fact that every shot is clean and crisp, when the pro's miss they dont miss bad.

Eg- I was on the practice range and watching a guy hit away. Mostly dead straight but i saw him hit a few pushes and pulls. Thats exactly what they were, not a slice or hook, but dead straight to the right, or dead straight to the left. Barely any sidespin to take note of.

Now apart from the fact that yes they are professionals and have loads of talent, and practice all day, are they really so super awesome that they never get much sidespin, or does their equipment play a part?

You know the super x flex irons and driver, does this help control their shots better?

The stiffer the shaft, the more control you have, but you sacrifice some distance. If you have a more whippy shaft you will get more distance. The pros just have muscle memmory built into their golf swing, because of all the time they have to, like you said, practice.

Did you watch any of their actual shots outside of the practice range? Some of them hit some very wild shots, especially with the driver.

Yeah watched most of Tigers round, he was pretty controlled i thought. And from 99% of the other guys i watched, i didnt see any big 50 meter cut shots, usually just a push or a pull.

When I use a "more whippy shaft" the only extra distance I experience is the extra distance walked while trying to find my ball after spraying it all over the place.

He looked very under control. Well on TV anyways. Haha. But Sean Foley is doing a great job with him. I think that because the course played so short, apart from Saturday, they didnt hit many drivers. And if they did, they werent trying to get as much distance out of each tee shot.

Exactly.... Less control with more whippy shafts.

    • Could someone more knowledgeable than I am explain exactly what Justin Rose is trying to feel/achieve with that exaggerated pre shot swing routine of his? It looks like he's trying to get his hands and arms to move down before he starts his rotation, but I'm sure that's not it
    • Yes.  Did he not hit the range before the round? When my first few pre-round drives aren't what I expect, the first thing I check is my driver settings, in case they changed.  I am on my second adjustable driver and I am still not trusting that golf gremlins don't change it between rounds. The second thing I check is my alignment and setup, and that is far more often the culprit than my settings. In any case, there are some simple things that I imagine should be on a professional player's pre-round checklist that I am surprised when they aren't.  One of those is the settings for any adjustable clubs.
    • It was also set at B1 at a previous event, and… so there's dubiousness around whether he's telling the truth (again).
