If you take a divot, you can use the sand to fill in your divot. Oftentimes it has some seed in it to speed up re-growth of the grass.

I'd like to add a little to this question if I may. Refilling divots with the sand is a good practice and, indeed, does help the turf to repair itself. With that said, is it better to replace your divot (if it's still intact) or refill with the sand mixture? I've heard a few schools of thought on this before. Some say the turf heals faster with the sand and that is the best way. Others say that if you replace the divot, it still allows the golfers to hit from turf and not a sand-filled divot, which is better for the golfers.

Any takes on this?

I've always been told at my course to fill in the divots with the sand/ seed mixture. The most safe practice is to ask the proshop before teeing off which they prefer.

I was told by the greenskeeper at my club that the best thing to do after taking a divot is to just take your club and pound in the area when you took the divot. You want to hit in the area around where the ripped pieces of grass are. It's difficult for me to explain here but that's what I was showed. I guess it's best if you do anything. Just don't leave your divot bare!
