What does hitting the ball pure even mean? I hit a handful of solid shots on Sunday - a couple of iron shots were possibly even "pured". I wonder what "puring" an iron shot really means. Did I pure the iron or the ball? Are there layers of material within the ball just waiting to be loaded with potential energy that are only tapped into once in a blue moon? Also isn't it user dependent? Maybe my pured iron shot only compresses the ball like a better player's average shot - maybe vise versa?!?

I played an interesting round at The Nursery on Sunday. The course isn't very long (in theory), and the overview on their website makes about 1/2 the holes seem like birdie opportunities. It didn't work out that way in reality. There are a few holes that seem backwards - with the ideal shot being a longer approach than tee shot. One par 4 plays way longer than the closing par 5 and 2 of the par 5s require a full fairway wood to get near the 150 for your 3rd - out of character with the sub-300 yard dogleg just played. My next trip there will be a little better - or maybe worse - my putting was much better.

The highlights:
1.) routine 2-putt par 4
2.) 5 iron through the fairway into the trees, flubbed pitch into an unplayable lie, drop behind the trees, 6-iron over the trees, up and down for bogey 6
3.) up and down (tap-in) for par 3
4.) TOPPED drive almost into the hazard, removed a hazard stake in my line, 5-iron to 150yds but still in the rough, flew the green into a shrub chopped a 4 iron onto the green, missed the putt, double bogey 6
5.) 3-iron pushed into the looong grass, flew green with a 56, 3 from there for a bogey 5
6.) high 3-iron into headwind just over the green, just missed getting up and down, bogey 4
7.) Stupid hole - 5-wood over the trees, pured 3-iron just right of the green, 3 from there, bogey 5
8.) 6 iron, wedge to ~ 20 feet. par 4
9.) smooth 3-wood (long!), pured 5-wood to ~ 70 yards, @#$#$% 3 putts. Oh well, bogey 6
Out in 42 .

10.) 3-iron up in the wind - right of the green, pitched to ~ 12 feet, drainage!. Par 3
11). Solid 3-wood to water's edge, nice low boring 5-wood to 155, punched a 7-iron to the front apron, par 5
12.) almost OB (from the "right" angle blimp it may have been but I don't think so - hit and move on), par 4
13.) waaay right - blockage - flubbage from a hardpan lie. Another pitch onto the green and 2 putts. Double bogey 5
14.) Nice smooth 5-iron that should have either been a 6 iron or on a different line - wet. Dropped. 5-wood to 195, 4-iron to pin high right (bailed out - trees and water left). Upand down for bogey 6.
15.) Switched to a Wilson Eco core (had been playing a Srixon Trispeed). 3 wood to middle of fairway (and short of the water - woot!). Knockdown 7 from 158 to 10 feet. Sadness - Par 4
16.) Great drive, 56 through green, should have chipped from apron - ball hopped on me. 2-putt Bogey 5.
17.) Punched a 6-iron against the wind - just left of the green from 158. Almost holed the chip (lipped out). Par 3.
18.) Hit a solid 3-wood to 225. Feeling good I pulled a 3-iron, pin high right edge - up and down. Finally a Birdie 4.

In with a 39 .

This was much tougher course in the wind than the slope rating (only 120) indicated. I learned a few things and if my ball striking and putting are decent next time out, I should be able to shave 2-3 strokes off pretty easily. Really looking forward to a break in the weather - Saturday looks good. The best part is it doesn't clash with Mother's day.

pure to me feels like nothing...make sense? ! haha!
you know, when you hit the ball so prefectly, it feels like you hit a marshmallow and get the "buttery" feeling...I guess...... :)
I miss that feeling consistently

I hear ya on the break in the weather....its really starting to pi$$ me off already
I just get in a good practice groove and it rains or snows for a week
"My swing is homemade - but I have perfect flaws!" - Me

That describes a couple long irons and 5-woods from Sunday. I almost cringe when it happens with the MP-11s. It usually means ending up 20+ yards long, but luckily they were into a headwind.

    • I speak for myself. If I inventory my swing thoughts, swing tempo, optimum muscle tension and rehearse a swing before I take my address, then I pull the trigger reasonably quickly with usually acceptable results. Like a proper program download before deploying it. If I don't bother to by forgetting or just not caring, I am inclined to look for my cues while hovering over the ball after taking the address, while tension builds up and then I fire with half ass program that is still buffering. I guess that's no better than rolling a dice. In other words, a good pre-shot routine does wonders. I am not advising folks to take 13 practice swings but one or two are reasonable. I am certain hitting half ass shitty shots and making double bogey takes longer than making a par.  My desire this year is to just that as I have not developed a habit taking a practice swings at all and have tendency to freeze over the ball after address. I think that is what @saevel25 is talking about in the OP.

    • I think there's a difference between taking time over the ball and taking time to play a shot, at least IMO. One thing I've noticed in a few guys I play with who take a long time over the ball to pull the trigger, is that their backswing is really fast and I think it makes it harder to have a smooth rhythmic down swing. It's almost like they take so long to swing that when they do they speed to catch up. Doesn't lead to good golf IMO.

    • As long as it's from a reputable seller it should be just fine. Just make sure the picture of the weight looks the right shaped weight for that specific driver head. You can even weigh it yourself when you get it if you want to be extra sure. Personally I don't consider $15 for something that can greatly change your impact and delivery characteristics to be "not cheap" but that's just my opinion. Especially since you know it's bringing it closer to what you were fit into and you're already saving a bunch of money by going the used/prior model year route too.
