At 45 I found myself at a cross roads this July after completely embarrassing myself at a memorial golf tournament for a friend who was killed during the WTC attack. Up until that point I'd been on a golf course only four times when I joined a group of neighbors for a trip to Myrtle Beach.

I decided I was either going to learn to play this game right or vow to not play again, but that I wouldn't subject myself or anyone else to a repeat of my last performance. I opted to learn the game. I watched alot of golf and figured given my athletic history, and willingness to invest time and some money on equipment and lessons I'd pick it up pretty easy...not so much

One thing I do suggest to new golfers like myself is to take lessons. Golfers are typically very friendly to other golfers, and always willing to help out a golfer who they see struggling with free advice. The advice is worthless if you dont have a fundamental understanding of how to grip a club, address the ball, and swing the club.

Structured lessons by a good pro helped me understand those fundamentals so that I could begin to identify some basic flaws in my own swing. After four lessons, and 5 - 6 hours per week of practice at the range I thought I was ready for my first real round of golf....
