Grammar Police: Fit or Fitted

At the risk of being called the grammar police, which is the correct use of the past tense of being fit for clubs?  Fit or fitted?

"I got fit for a new driver"

"I got fitted for a new driver"

I believe both are correct. Fit is commonly newer, American English, fitted is British English. Fit - Fitted - Fitted Fit - Fit - Fit Fitted is more traditional, fit began emerging in journalism and scholarly writing in the 1950s. I think fit is being more and more used, also in Britain, but at this point probably more common in America. Personally, I prefer fit over fitted.
