I am getting bored ........ I play to a decent level and I can work the ball, straight to baby fade is my natural swing (inside-square-inside), working the ball from right to left (draw) or intended hook ...... no problem, but curving the ball with an intended slice ...... BIG problem.

Mostly I just hit it dead straight to the left even when I open the clubface, I figure I just close/square it before impact and the ball ends up left of the green at best.

I have been experimenting with ball positions etc., but moving the ball more forward makes no sense to me as I play about all shots from the inside left ankle.

I studied the ball flight laws, etc......

The best results came sofar from weakening the grip, trying to play from outside to inside, ball more to the middle ...... is maybe a nice fade, but not enough for curving around a tree.

Do I need this shot ???? not really ....... but I should be able to do so, when it is needed, might save an extra shot now and then.....

Would that I were you and couldn't slice. But since I can't keep it on the same fairway maybe I can help heh.

Don't you mean moving ball backwards in the stance, so you don't have time to square up the club before impact?

Could give you the rundown of things my instructor has me working on to quit slicing into the next county and you can do the opposite...relax grip so I don't lock out arms, ball more forward to give a chance for the clubface to close, get weight back to front better (had me doing front foot only hitting drills, maybe you could try hitting off your back foot). Then of course open up to the taget.

My real doozy drives (go out 150-200 then about 75 yards dead sideways and look like they may keep turning to make a u turn back to me) feel like if I had a samari sword from the top of the backsing I'd slice the inside third of the ball with the club, leading with the hosel kind of feel but makes contact with the face instead of a shank.

If you can figure out how to do it, maybe I can figure out how to reliably STOP doing it.

I can slice ...... it is about as easy as it can be, but hitting a controlled slice around a tree is different .......

In theory the slice I need in an swingpath 10 degrees from outside in inside and a club face that is about 5 degrees open at impact from the swingpath and 5 degrees closed to the targetline, so starting off to the left and curving back to the right.

In your case you will be probably coming over the top, resulting in a outside inside swing..... if your blade is directed towards the target, the ball will start a bit to the left and turn right severely, but from what I read from your problem , your swingpath might even be more extreme from the ouside to inside with a clubface directed to the right of the target line ...... and it takes of to the right and keeps on going to the right even more,

    • You know what, I have thought about moving to Arizona a little bit, but I do love the winters here. It really is nice down here from like November thru March. And I totally would do a home setup thing, I really should, but my stupid tennis elbow is really so easily flared up. It's getting better every month with dry needling, but it's so annoying too. I do think I'm finally solving the root causes thru both the dry needle treatments and fixing this steepness/toe strike thing. The former actually does heal it and learning how to plane the club correctly reduces the trauma the elbow takes because of the increase in sweet spot hits. I really should just do a trip to Scottsdale though, I went there once many years ago and it was a beautiful place. Didn't play golf at the time so I really should go. I'd love to get away from the humidity too. And I know there are great mats out there, like at Golf Evolution for example I've been told. In my case, I will hit foam balls off a mat sometimes at home and that has some of the effects of actually hitting a ball while reducing the impact. And this is maybe a topic for another thread, but I've found just making air swings to be more beneficial to me than I originally thought -- that going really fast and not hitting a ball shows my flaws quite a bit too. I'll film myself just making fast air swings inside and trying to fix it. It's almost like speed training except if speed training included trying to make a really technically sound swing on top of it. Hopefully this comment isn't too much of a tangent, but It is the winter depression thread, so maybe tangents about what to do with oneself indoors with golf is okay. Appreciate it though, I really have thought about Arizona a couple times over the last year at least.
    • Day 23: chipped in the garage with foam balls. Focused on crisp contact. Did mostly lower chips but mixed in some higher ones. Slightly more open stance, plus ball more toward middle, plus higher handle led to the best results. Need to keep those 3 things in mind.
    • Day 2: Worked on distance wedge swing feels. The feel for me is to keep the upper body down more while straightening the lead leg.
    • Day 18 (September 22).  I understand the two club drill better, and was alternating that and hitting a few smooth 6-iron shots;  indoors, off a mat, into the net.  I spent about 20 minutes on this thus far tonight.
    • I don't know your family or work situation, but have you considered relocating to Arizona?  I was out there the past month or so and played quite a few times;  it's hot, but not humid.   Or, if your house is sufficient size, consider setting up an indoor practice area, so at least when the weather or your schedule isn't cooperating, you can still hit a few. ... said Shindig, who has routinely disappeared for months, sometimes a year or more, at a time because of getting busy at work and just quietly sobs to himself as he walks past the room where his mat and net are during that time.  Dang, I need to not allow that to happen again.
