Hi All,

I bought a Taylor Made 510 a few weeks back and finally got to use it at the weekend.

The question I would like answered is "What should it sounds like?"
I switched from a Callaway Steelhead III to a 510 because of the weight and size of the sweet spot. I felt I wasn't getting the most I could out of the Callaway, however, it sounded beautiful and made a nice ting sound when I hit it. The Taylor Made doesn't it makes a slapping sound. Is this normal? I bought it off eBay and it DOES have a serial number but I've not seen one hit before.

The distance is very good, about 20-30 yards more than the cally so I'm not bothered about that, just wondered if it's alright?

Thanks,

Tommy J

how's that any different than asking someone to explain what something looks like, in writing. or smells like, in writing. or tastes like, in writing.

you get the point. anyway, never hit any of the specific model clubs you listed, i have hit some of the earlier TMs (before R5) and they generally sound like crap. The sound was dull, instead of the crisp clean ping that i'm used to. best sounding driver to me is the Ping G2 (not G5)...made a nice little "crack" when you caught one good. i personally wouldn't be too worried about it...if you want to verify, go into a local golf store and see if you find your club and hit it.

I have a TM R580XD and the best I can describe the sound is, hitting a softball with a softball bat.

It's a dull sounding, low pitch "crack", I tried my friend's Callaway Big Bertha driver this weekend and it made a "ting" sound such that you described. Few hits actually hurt my left ear (I'm a righty), it felt like someone stabbed it.

That's great chaps, That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Thank you.

My Father commented on the sound and said it didn't sound right compared to the Callaway which got me thinking.

Thanks again for your help.

I still have my old R580XD and I would call it anything EXCEPT dull. Are you hitting it in the sweet spot? People at the range would always remark how incredibly loud it was. I wouldn't call in a ting though either, it was just too loud for that.

It's loud but dull. I definitely wouldn't say it's a sharp penetrating sound.

That sounds about right, a dull thud as opposed to a tinging sound. If I'm not hitting the sweet spot then I'd like to see it when I do.

    • How would you change the rule to make it more "fair", and still be consistently interpreted and enforced?  It may not be perfect, but as a referee I can watch a player and look at the ground surface and make a ruling.  How can it be changed to address different players and their individual height, weight, and shoe size?
    • A bit old.. but this rule is kind of unfair ...  Lets say that you have Emiliano Grillo and Darren Clark playing together on a PGA event and on one hole both hit the ball to the middle of the fairway only 1 inch apart. When they arrive to the ball Darren take his stand and water comes out from the ground and remains there so he procceds take a free drop on a dry area and hit his shot.  Afterwards Grillo takes his stance in the same spot as Clark, but because he is a lot ligther, no water araise from the ground. According to the rules he is not allowed a free drop from the same spot darren had a free drop seconds before. I would love to see this happenning live on TV. Can an argument be made by grillo? could and official use the "spirit of the rule" to let him have a free drop?
    • Day 84 (24 Jul 25) - Weekly nine hole round cancelled as the course was tied up with a ladies tournament.  No worries - set up with the 54deg wedge and worked on varied shots with green side focus in mine (those nGIR's).  Worked between high floaters and low spinners from varied lies replicating the types of lies I typically see on the courses around here.
    • I meant lb for lb - so yes I agree it's wheel weight. How would you go about explaining that to someone? Perhaps the rotational inertia being higher with heavier wheels and the rotational inertia of the wheel requiring more torque to make its angular acceleration increase at the same rate?
    • Day 7: Had a virtual putting lesson with @iacas. Spent some time afterwords working with the metronome.
