Hey guys, I'm really really wanting to get back into golf, but I can't spend the $1500+ to get the clubs I want. So I'm trying to find some alternatives.

I've always wanted to get a set of some older clubs that are in really good condition, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or where to find some. So I'm looking for some help on the subject.

I'm not sure what really is classified as vintage, so excuse me if I'm misusing that term.

A couple questions:

Would it be a bad idea to get some older clubs?

What are the downsides?

Am I wrong in thinking that they would be less forgiving?

Where would be a good place to look for a set in good condition?

What should I expect to spend on a good set?

I won't be playing competitively, just for fun. I just need new clubs because it's killing me to watch golf on Tv and not be able to go out and play. I haven't played in 3 years after I broke both my wrists, but they're working normal now so I feel a strong desire to go back to the only sport I've ever loved. Money is tight and I can't spend a lot.

Thanks,

Coby

Coby-

there's absolutely nothing wrong with using older clubs.  they go just as far as anything out today and are just as forgiving.  you could easily find a good set at a thrift store, or even a couple different clubs from different makers and piece together a decent set that won't cost much.  look for irons that have cavity backs, not blades.  look for shafts that don't have rust on them.  if there's a set with graphite shafts that's good too. the shafts don't need to be really stiff but also not really whippy.  the main expense will be getting good grips that fit YOUR feel.  don't let anyone tell you that you are a certain size.  we've all experimented with grips and from what i've experienced the trend is to go with a larger grip than what has been "traditional".  look for a couple hybrids in the 19 - 25* range in case you struggle with the 3 and 4 irons.  driver loft of 10* or more will help you get the ball up in the air until you can get fitted for one.  look around your area for a clubfitter.  they will help you more than any sales person in a store.

do you check on Craigslist?  most areas have plenty of good deals going for less than $100 for a full set of clubs and a bag.

Thanks Tweaky.

I'll probably try to find some irons first, then woods, then a wedge and putter. Irons are my strong point so I'll try to find some really good ones that are in great condition.

Are there and brands/models I should look out for in regards to irons and woods?

I'm going to start looking on a bunch of local classifieds and Ebay also and hopefully I can start putting together a good set.

Link is for Nickent irons on eBay. Nickent went bankrupt a year ago. Dick's Sporting Goods just bought them. They made great clubs and you can get them at a reasonable price. I have been playing Nickent for years(see signature).  Let me know any questions you may have.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
