... it was on an executive style course.  There are 4 county courses out here, 1 of which is an executive course.  I haven't played on that course since I was a junior in high school, but my club golf partner invited me to play on Friday, so I figured I could use the practice and accepted.  The course is a par 65 just over 4600 yards and rated 63.2 with a slope of 106.  I had been playing horrible so far this season, posting 104, 105 and a 59 during a 9 hole round.  My swing, on the range, felt spot on.  It was NOT translating the the course, though.  I figured this round would give me an opportunity to work on my irons, which is where I needed a LOT of help.

It started out pretty much like most rounds had this year, as I took a bogey on a fairly simple par 3 followed by another bogey on a fairly simple par 5.  I managed to settled down a little bit and played okay until the 6th hole.  This was a par 3 with water bordering the left side.  The pin was cut in the back left corner, so I decided to aim for the center of the green... but I bailed out horribly and sliced the ball WAY right.  It settled next to a tree root, so I had no REAL shot at getting the ball onto the green... instead, I dumped it into the trap.  A skulled shot would have gone into the water, so I laid off of it and left it 45+ feet short and 3-putted from there for a triple bogey.  Made par on the 7th... an ugly bogey from the middle of the fairway 150 yards away on the 8th and then hit a good shot on the 9th hole and sunk the 16 footer for birdie to finish the front side +7 with a 40.

The back started much better as I made par after a nice up and down on 10, landed my tee shot on the 11th about 8" right of the hole and then made the 12 footer coming back down the hill for birdie, and followed that with a par of the 12th.  I had my only 'bad' hole on the back on the 13th hole.  Poor tee shot put me in trouble, I put the ball in the middle of the fairway about 45 yards from the hole and then proceeded to flub that shot, skull a chip and 3-putt for another triple bogey.  I then finished bogey - bogey - par - par- par for a +4 back side score of 36 and a total of 76 which put me at +11.

Previously, my best had been an 85 (+13) last season.  It felt nice to put together a string of holes like I did between the 9th and 12th on Friday.  Looking back, I didn't play all that well.  I struggled on some easy holes and just happened to make a number of up and downs to keep my score from falling into the 'usual' category.

I've got a big match this weekend at a course where I've played very well in the past.  I'm hoping that continues on Sunday and that I can post in the neighborhood of an 85 again.  That would easily put me inside the Top 10 for the first time this season.  Here's to hoping that the poor weather they are calling for holds off until next Monday.

Hey nice comeback on the back 9.  Keep at it.  If you find yourself playing poorly, play for your misses and let your short game do the work.

Good luck!
