Hi guys

Recently I was struggeling with a open club face at impact and I have traced it back to a cupped wrist at the top. Actually it was not just a cupped wrist I was also not releasing the wrist cock properly either. This really led me to a contrived position at impact in an effort to get it square, I rarely got it square though and have played quite a while with a almost controlable fade.

Luckily I have identified the problem and I am trying to correct this. I have hit some really good shots recently, not that I have been driving them 300 yards or even sticking them to the pin but they have been effortless and really pure. Actually so much so that I could say nearly a club longer with my irons. It seems that releasing wrist cock at the right time and keeping a flat wrist at the top naturally squares the club face and adds speed effortlessly.

My problem is the flat wrist at the top it really feels so contrived. It feels really uncomfortable and I also think its effecting my swing plane (making it more upright) . It seems I can only perform a limited amount of shots on the course (about 6 holes) before I start slipping back into the more comfortable hinged position.   I'm actually really confused about what I should do or how I should go about sorting this problem. Has anyone encountered this? Or has anyone some drills to help? Is it possible to play with a hinged wrist at the top and release it properly..? Are the two linked?

I really wish I know about wrist cock and release along time ago. It would probably have saved me a lot of range time TBH. I feel as if I was trying to use wrist hinge to generate power since the beginning. I don't think its intuitive that speed is generated from cocking the wrist. :(

Both a flat and cupped lead wrist at the top have been used successfully by different players.

Starting with a very slightly strong grip and a closed stance, I use what feels like a 90 degree rotation in my backswing.  At the top, the inside of my lead wrist will be cupped, while the outside is straight.  That works well for me to get the clubface back to square or slightly closed at impact.  It may not work for others.  It may depend on other factors like stance, grip, swing plane, etc.

I dealt with the same problem last year, My cupped wrist was causing me to no get the club face square at impact and I was slicing the ball, and as soon as I flattened my wrist out it really straightened out my slice. At first it was very uncomfortable but I actually traced the comfort back to my grip. I was holding the club more in the palm of my left hand with the shaft almost running up my wrist. This was making it harder to turn and flatten my wrist. This year I switched to a finger grip with my left hand and it makes the flat wrist feel natural with no more strain. Maybe have look at how the club shaft is in your left hand and play around with some different configurations and see if some are more comfortable than others.
