So I got this Ping Rapture 3 Wood at Golf Galaxy used $35. It was playable, no dents, face was in good shape but the club looked like it had gotten into a fight with a big rock and lost on the underside. I played a few rounds with it and it hits nicely so I figured whatever. Then I found a setup in my basement that my dad used to use to restore and polish metal when he was contractor. I dug it out and figured what the hell lets see what I can do. Worst thing that happens is a $35 dollar club gets even cheaper. Now I might sound crazy for taking a grind stone and file to a golf club but they are really fine and with the correct oil you remove less then one twentieth of a millimeter when done correctly. After grinding off much of the crap on the bottam you take steel wool and give it a once over then wash away the oils with mineral spirits. You then wash the surface thoroughly and buff it.

When it was all said and done It looked absolutely amazing. The deeper scratches were still visible but the thing looked amazing, like a mirror. I played it yesterday and when I got home the club was sooo easy to clean. The metal polish stopped dirt and mud from sticking and even the grass stains just wiped right off no soaking, no soap, no water. I was like wow. Now onto my questions.

Does anyone see a way this could damage or change the way the club plays?

Does anyone see a reason not to apply the polish to all my clubs since it seemed to protect this one so well?

Thanks

It shouldn't change the way the club interacts with the ball, unless you polished the face of the club as well.  I polished my irons recently (never did get around to doing the second polish as I had planned), but I did not file any gouges smooth or touch the face of the club.  For such little material removal, you could probably get away with just a polishing compound like I had used, with a rotary tool.  I have some before/after pics posted here somewhere....

Yeah The face obviously you don't want coated in crud. It is amazing the difference should have taken b4 and afters. Its shocking. It used to be all black and rough on the bottom now its silvery and smooth.

Im not to worried about it. The amount of material I ground off the bottom is miniscule and that is the thickest part of the club.

I had a real nice setup for grinding out the crap on the bottom and then to finish it off an old polishing lathe with a heat activated polish. The thing shined right up. If it weren't for a few paint chips its look almost new.
