Beginner buying clubs question

Hello, I've only started golfing earlier this month. I was using a buddies old extra set which was a mix of old clubs. I didn't know, since I am new if I am better off buying a used beginner set or a new cheapy set (wilson, hagen for $200-$300). Here is a set I am looking at used, it's very cheap I just would like to know what everybody thinks about this and I would always be open for other tips etc. I live in ohio by Firestone Invitational and would like to try that out at the end of this month. I'm picking up quick, played 9 holes last week and had a few pars. I know it's nothing bragworthy but still.

I also wanted to add I have around 800 total to spend but I've been told not to invest a lot of money until next year.

What I did was read a bunch of reviews and figure out a great set to piece together by buying "nearly new" clubs from GolfClubExchange (now defunct) and EBay. Ended up with a very expensive set for about half off with no wear  I cared about. I bought my irons as a set but really shouldn't have, mostly useless (but not as easy to find as separates.) At the end of the day, my recommendation is: don't do that.

What I wish I had done was take a few lessons from a pro before buying anything and asked him or her to recommend the minimum set I should carry (not what to buy, but which clubs I will actually want to carry as a beginner.) For example, a putter, one wedge, only a few irons, a wood or hybrid, and a driver (and I bet they'd have told me to skip the driver for a while too.) If you go that route, you can also get expert help with sizing because they are not one size fits all.

This is my third season. The first season I used a full used set that my dad used "back in the day". It doesn't matter what clubs you have - if you don't have proper swing mechanics it won't matter what clubs you have.

My advice: Play your first season with a set of used, cheap clubs. During the off season (if you have on where you live) - buy yourself a new set and get them fitted. Then before next season get a couple lessons and go to the range quite often. The difference in fitted clubs and non-fitted clubs is enormous. You'll start out terrible but eventually fill them in.

If your willing to spend $300 on a set of Irons I would suggest buying a new set, but buy a prior year model that's on clearance.  i.e I picked up a brand new set of Calloway x-22 tours for $315.  Most places will fit them for you for free and like other people have said, that will make a huge difference!!

Start with lessons it will be better before you start bad habits that take longer and harder to fix.

You can find really good quality clubs at excellent prices at Callaway PreOwned. They're used clubs, but in fantastic shape, and the wesbite runs specials all the time. Actually, they're currently running a 20-30% discount on all their X-series irons and woods.

I recently bought a used set of Diablo Edges for $200. Brand new they retail for around $400. Quite the deal!

Hey, don't buy clubs anywhere other than Ebay. Especially if you aren't that good. There is no reason to spend more than 50% of a club's MSRP or to buy a club new. Every single club I have I have bought really cheap off of Ebay. Just make sure the seller has a good rating.

That made me sad... I paid 600 for my non-tours 2 seasons ago :(
