Just wondering who here has played these clubs and with what level of success they had. I've played blades previously (695's), but ultimately got rid of them because the shafts were to stiff (7.0). I'm currently playing x20 tours and have no real legit complaints but  i had the oppurtunity to get the pings at a great price so i gave it a go? Any feed back on these clubs would be great! Thanks

My son has played the S-59's since they came out approx. 6 years ago.  He just loves them.  He likes a more  "traditional" look - (I know kind of an oxy moron with Ping), as he did not like any of the offerings from Callaway, etc when we purchased these.  They definitely are more of a players club vs. the game improvement clubs on the market today.  I see in your signature that you had the CG golds.  I had these, and liked them a lot.  The Pings will definitely feel different than the CG Golds.  If you tried the CG reds when they came out, these will be closer to the Pings.  If you got a good deal, and like the look of the Pings I think you should be happy with them.

Here's a summary of the S series Ping irons (based on Maltby's 6-category MPF system)

Model Year MPF Category
S59 2005 (?) 660 Game Improv
S58 2007 778 Super GI
S57 2009 612 GI
S56 2011 562 GI

The S59 was an upper-level Game Improvement club; S series model with highest MPF was S58. Ralph Maltby noted S58 had increased playability for a smaller blade from a lower Vertical Center of Gravity.

I swapped X20 irons for X20 Tour irons at Christmas (found set shafted in PX 5.0 vs. standard 6.0). The X20 Tours are Super GI, and feedback is superb - you know on impact if it's a poor, OK, or great shot.

X20 Tours come in at Super GI, somewhere in the 700s for MPF. Not sure if slightly higher MPF would make X20 Tour noticeably "easier" than S59; probably whichever one feels best to you is keeper.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I recently bought my Ping S59 set and I play 4-PW and absolutely love them! Previously I hit the Ping eye 2 irons and although I did like those, I feel that my distance and playability have improved extremely with these clubs. I got my set for 275 slightly used and I feel I can't beat a deal like that.

    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
