I'm looking to finally get a new set of golf clubs and replace the Wilson Prestige set I have been playing since high school (graduated 1992).  Trying to stay right around $300.00.  Plan is to buy used and have dug up the following and would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. I'm a 30 something handicap currently but plan to start playing a lot more.  I have a 2 iron that I somehow hit great (hence no 5 wood) and a putter I'm keeping.  I know that would give me 15 clubs but until I can get a game i'm not too concerned with that atm.

Titleist 983K 9.5 degree driver

Cleveland Launcher TI Fairway 15 degree wood

Mizuno MX-17 irons 3-PW

Cleveland 900 gunmetal wedges (52, 56, and 60 degrees)

Can currently get all of the above for around $305.00 shipped.

I also know it's best to get fitted and try out the clubs.  Plan to do that as well and look locally for some good used/quality clubs as well.

I know you have just $300, but since you only upgrade once every 20 years, you might want to get what you really need on this one.

Suggestion:

  • Find some good used irons, test them and get fitted for them (and buy them).
  • Then, add new woods and wedges as money becomes available.

Try to establish a relationship with the shop where you get your irons, and they can watch for used/last year's woods and wedges you might like. (Give 'em your wish list)

Focus, connect and follow through!

Thanks for the advice WUtiger.  I took it and went looking this weekend.  Good thing I did too.  come to find out my irons needed adjusted to 2.5 up.  Plus, I found a nice set of Adams A4 forged irons and a Ping G5 10.5 degree driver which felt nice and I was hitting good too.  Now just have to find me a 3 wood, 21 or 22 degree hybrid and a couple wedges.  All of which I will now go back to the 2 local places where they have a good selection of used clubs and I can try them out.  Now just have to find out if that good feeling translates to the course after I pick the irons up.
