Keeping Golf Affordable

I was tracking the comments on changes in grooves and golf balls. It makes me wonder what changes do people believe could be made to keep golf affordable, keep courses playable for hackers yet still challenge low single digit golfers. Eric suggested grass bunkers, easier for high handicaps, tough for low handicaps, cheaper to maintain.

1. In urban areas where land is valued and taxed at best use. Golf courses
are often turned into everything from shopping malls to cemetaries.
2. To much sand, over watering etc.
3. Playability, walkability, to much land being moved.
4. Most new courses are hooked to housing developments. Distance
between tees is extended to make more room for houses, walking
becomes difficult, in fact I contend that courses may be designed with
carts needed to protect this revenue source.
5. Could courses at least in colder climates be designed so that at least
driving range areas or outside parts of the course be used for winter
recreation?
6. Other, pricing structure, liability, outreach to women, cost of instruction,
etc.
