So this year I want to figure out my handicap. But, I am not going to be a member of a course. I guess it won't be official, but that is ok, I do not plan on entering any tournaments or anything...

What would be the most accurate way for me to determine my handicap?

Thanks!

Ask the course where you play the most if they do official handicaps if they do sign up with them to keep track and send in your scores to recieve an official handicap card. You must go into the pro shop and post your scores on the sheet and they will send it in, usually about every 3-4 weeks. cost $25-35. Join a league and they will keep an unofficial handicap for you on the course the league plays.

There are a ton of sites on the web that you can use to calculate your USGA Handicap Index. Here are a few...(ps, always remember, Google is your friend!):

http://www.pgaprofessional.com/handicap.html

If you want to do it yourself, it's really easy to do. It's a very simple formula. I've got a good golf buddy that I do golf trips with every year. Sucker never keeps a handicap, but always wants strokes. The other member of the group and I laid down the law last year..."bring your last 20 scorecards with you, or you're playing at scratch!!". We sat down over beers the first night, and I calculated his index with a napkin and a golf pencil. 15.6.

It's fun to track your handicap!

Keep in mind, though, if you don't have your handicap through an approved organization, like your local USGA affiliate course, your handicap will probably not be accepted for any tournament play.

Thanks, I will try to keep track myself this year... I will have to go by RCGA rules, though...

Pretty sure North America uses standard USGA calcs. Also, USGA and R&A; cooperate to make sure rules don't differ for different parts of the world. Not sure if that applies to handicaps, though. Good question. I may have to look that up!

Btw, I haven't used those sites, but the first one looks pretty good. If you're interested in the formula let me know and I'll post it.

Gotta run to work now!

Thanks!

I am just looking to get a baseline this season... I will just keep it myself following the method posted on rcga.org:

The Handicap Factor is calculated using the best 10 of the player's last 20 rounds and updated with each new round played. The Handicap Factor travels with the golfer from course to course and is adjusted up or down depending on the length and difficulty of the course played, resulting in a "Course Handicap".
