I've arranged a golf weekend away with 7 friends, which we're starting to make an annual event, but we never have a good scoring system in place. We usually play 3-4 rounds and mix it up a bit with stableford, foursomes and stroke play.

We've done home-made systems like stableford score plus 3 points each for cloest-to-the-pin / longest drive, but nothing really works, or sticks.

Does anybody have any clever scoring ideas for holidays such as this (however complex they are)? And if the scoring system can then produce an ongoing 'order of merit' type score for the ongoing years that would be brilliant.

Would love to hear anyones thoughts.

I'd play some two-man events with teams of four, like a Ryder Cup type event. You can use whatever scoring system you'd like, and I'd vary it - stableford, two man best ball, two man combined score, even Vegas or skins or whatnot.

Then I'd make each match worth three points - front, back, total - and I'd develop an individual "record" from that.

The next year you play the teams would be based on the rankings:

Team A: Players ranked 1, 4, 5, 8

Team B: Players ranked 2, 3, 6, 7

Mix up the games and the team pairings throughout the rounds you play and it'll work out pretty nicely.
