I picked up golf about a year ago and I have been swinging a set of 2004 Callaway Big Bertha Irons. I really like them, but the graphite shafts on them are beginning to crack. The 5 iron and pitching wedge are already unusable and the 7 iron is close to it.

I'm just looking for some suggestions on what I should do. I have about $150-$200 to spend, and I'm assuming I could get about 70 or 80 for my old sticks.

Thanks in advance.

I asked the same question a while back.  A complete reshafting with quality shafts usually costs about as much as a new set of irons.  If you can get fitted that changes the game a little.

Any chance of getting fitted?  A fitter put a midsize grip in my hand and took strokes off my game.  Its really worth it.  I had a good experience.

If you like the clubs reshaft them but you can also get some decent sets on ebay or craigs list.

Ping G5s and G10s are good u could get them pretty cheap used or just look at some older callaways somthing similar to what u have.

another thing is if u can reshaft your self it wouldnt be that expensive.

I play Callaway X-20s.  I like them quite a bit.  They launch high, and that can get to some, but I don't mind the height as there is almost never wind where I play.

Shotly had a deal yesterday on X-20's that would fit your budget.

Economically, it depends on the shaft and grip you select, but if you are reshafting 8-9 irons you are definitely in the range of some of the deals on new irons.

As far as reshafting, your Big Bertha's have a bore through hosel and they can be tricky to work on.  It your experienced at doing "fine" work with your tools and can follow instructions than it could be a fun adventure.  It likely will cost a minimum of $100 for materials and could easily go to $250 or more depending on the shafts you pick.

It's already been suggested that a better way might be used irons.  X-18's or X-18 pro's are old enough to be cheap and new enough to be found in pretty good shape.  I've been told by Callaway players that Callaway has yet to improve on the X-18 in a game improvement iron.

Another idea that's a long shot is that you said your shafts are beginning to crack, you could call Callaway's customer service.  Your clubs are clearly out of warranty but Callaway's customer service is legendary, they'll bend over backwards to keep people happy.  They might want to see the clubs, maybe cut you a deal on reshafting, get you a discount coupon for Callaway pre-owned, I have no idea, but it might be worth a call.  Be polite, tell them the truth and ask for their help.  You might be surprised.

Some times you can find "pull outs" on ebay where someone has reshafted a set.  You could look to see if by chance there were some that would match your clubs.  the only problem would be that with graphite there is a risk that the shaft was damaged when it was removed.  I used to work in a golf shop and we would charge a lot extra to reshaft Callaways because of the extra time it took for the Bore through  shaft so it could be expensive to have them done at a pro shop.  Your best bet would be to by a used set.  Also check with Callaway's customer service because they are good to work with you.

I'd personally spend the money and get a newer set of clubs. I bought my irons off craigslist for $250, and they were hardly even used (probably a 9.75 out of 10). Good used clubs can be had for a great price, you've just gotta be willing to search for them. I'm sure you can find many sets of Callaway irons on Craigs or eBay. I'd also look at some Cleveland or Adams irons if I were you.

Either way, good luck with your search!

Take a look at Callaway Pre-Owned.

You might consider the X20 irons. If they are shafted in Uniflex steel, make sure you like the Uniflex. I thought Uniflex was OK, but no everyone likes it.

Lots of graphite-shafted sets available on CPO, but will cost a bit extra.

    • I watched that video a few days ago. I chuckled at him saying it is so much easier to set up than plopping a GC3 down and turning it on. I love how he did his test hitting AlmostGolf balls, too. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Do I think this is remotely accurate? No. It's measuring ball speed. It's not getting spin or anything like that. Certainly not in dim conditions outside at night.
    • Has anyone tried this? Just came across it.
    • Actually through BlueGolf the 9-hole calculation is still the old version. There's other issues to apply, I guess might be the BlueGolf system that is not updated yet. The other thing I have doubt, is where can I find in the rules of handicapping information about Modified Handicap with a capital letter on the side "M", these capital letters still aplies ? Other doubt, do you know any system that the player can post the score, and for peer review the partners can validate the score as marker on the app or system of handicap? Best.

    • I can't access the Brazil Golf organization's information, perhaps you can tell us what you think its being done wrong.  I do know that lots of people were confused with the new method of "completing" 9-hole rounds based on "expected score" for the unplayed holes.
