So this is my second season golfing and probably play 90-100 not counting my mulligans off the tee box which I need to work on next season, so realistically 110 with all penalties probably. My putting is pretty poor, it really just hasn't been my emphasis for improving this season. I got a used Ping Pal putter when I started that is pretty old and I'm not really in love with it. Occasionally I make a nice putt but I make a lot of poor ones too. I'm not under the impression that its all the putter but I'm wondering how much better new putters are than this dinosaur? Are they just prettied up versions or are there substantial improvements?

I went through a few types of putters before I settled down on the one Im currently using. Putting was killing my game. It is the club I use most so I definitely had to go something I was in love with. After owning a few different types and playing with others I finally settled on a cheap (relative) TM Rossa Monte Carlo CS. I love it. I played 9 holes tonight and finished out with less than a 2 putt average per hole which is fantastic for me. That certainly doesnt happen often.

Half the "hot" putters these days have copied elements of the early Pings. And, newer Ping putters still hold their own.

I stumbled across a 1970s era Ping Pal when a new golf shop opened up in 2005, and picked it up for $35 - with regrip included.

Fiddled around with it for a couple of seasons, and then started using it regular in 2007. Got a putter fitting in 2008. Fitting trimmed it an inch, added weight, increased loft and flattened lie. Plus, I got slightly large Winn grip. Pal has worked great since the fitting.

Whether you keep your Pal or get a new putter, definitely get a fitting. You make at least a third of your shots with a putter.

If you actually get another putter, hand onto that vintage Pal - it's a classic!

If your PAL  is stamped Scotsdale AZ. don't change the grip or anything. The same goes for Phoenix, AZ zip code ending in 029. The oldest most valuable Pings didn't come with Ping Grips.

I'm not a Ping collector but I do know that much about them.
