I've just moved to the US and i'm looking into buying a whole new setup. First off i'm looking at Irons and i would appreciate any constructive advice people can offer.

My history -- I dont have a handicap, i havn't been a member of a club since i was a junior but i have played relatively regularly over the last few years and over the coming years i expect to play alot more due to the number of affordable course here in TX.  My ball striking particularly in the longer Irons is the strongest part of my game.

I've tried a number of different clubs at golfsmith and some other shops and i narrowed it down to 2 irons which people may consider very different. The Adams CB2's and the TM Burner 2.0s. I hit them both well but with the CB2's feeling a little straighter and in general almost as long. Reading reviews it seemed that the general consensus that the 2.0s were probably the best "game improving iron" and "most forgiving" for that sort of money which is why i tried them.. The more i researched the more the CB2's popped up and after hitting them i really liked how they felt and looked, more solid, less clunky and importantly for me a bit more straight!

The question is am i an idiot for getting an Iron like the CB2 rather than a big old Cavity like the 2.0 given my relative playing standard? I expect to improve pretty quickly but if i hit the CB2 best already then why shouldn't i just buy them?

Thanks in Advance... Nick

The CB2s are great clubs and will suit you fine. They are a good choice.

Prepare for a string of responses which will begin:

"Why don't you check out    x    ", x being the clubs that person plays.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

How do i know you're not a CB2 player though ;)

Seriously though thanks for the response, i figured i would get plenty of those kind of responses you mentioned. My head is pretty much made up but its always nice to get some external opinions!

Burner 2.0's are a few degrees stronger in terms of loft. they should be longer.

buy whatever you hit best. if you're committed to the game, i'd lean toward the CB2. months later, i'm sort of regretting not doing the same.

As said, the Burners are lofted a little stronger so you will get more distance out of them. The Adams are great clubs and are definitely fine clubs for players with mid to high handicaps... Mizuno JPX-800s are nice too. I've heard some good reviews on the Ping G15 and Callaway Razr X, but I personally couldn't get past the look of them. Also if your store carries them, try out the Cleveland TA7s. Great Irons that are a steal at around $3-400 new. Go to your local store that has a range/simulator, pick a couple different makes/models and try them out. Go with whatever feels best. If the CB2s still feel the best, then go with them.

Thanks for the responses people, i'll probably take one more trip to golfsmith just to make sure but i'll be ordering the CB2's unless something amazing happens.

Thanks again,

Nick
