Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to golf and brand new to the forum. I've gone to the course a couple times with a buddy a few years back but I just started getting into it again with another friend. Been to the range a few times this year and the course once but I'm still in need of my own set. I'm completely lost though and was thinking of buying used to save money since it will be my first set. I really need help choosing between the four I've narrowed it down to and would appreciate some guidance from some more knowledgeable and experienced golfers. I'm going to link the four ads below. All four are around the same price point. Thanks in advance for your help.

First of all, a person who knows little about golf should not be buying clubs online.

Talk to a friend who is a fairly decent golfer, and ask him for the name of a reliable golf pro in your area. Then, tell the pro you want:

  • A couple of beginner lessons (learn basics correctly at start)
  • Help in selecting a used set of golf clubs

You want to be able to hit the clubs in person, and have the pro give you a static fitting : This basic fitting checks to make sure the clubs are the right length shaft for your body build, the proper flex shaft, and the right lie angle (lie board test).

If your clubs don't fit you in basic ways, you'll have a hard time learning to swing properly. This may appear more difficult than just buying a set, but co-workers who have taken up golf tend to do well if lessons and club selection are handled together.

Keep us posted, and let us know what happens!

(P.S. The sets you linked are basic beginners sets from a few years back. The steel shafts in the fairway woods - instead of graphite - and absence of hybrids tips us off)

Focus, connect and follow through!

I'd go with the Cobra/Top Flite combo. You don't get a putter or a sand wedge, but you do get a bag. Also, with the irons being virtually a "pro line" set, you could turn them over later versus those other setups.

It's not like any of those sets are very expensive, so you're not out much either way. Just do it!!

Thanks for your thoughts and input. I also came to that conclusion myself after posting and emailed the seller but too bad someones already got him holding it for him to look at on the weekend. He said if that doesnt work out he'll give me a shout. I wonder which of the other three would be best if the cobras arent available..

How long is your golf season in Ottawa? How long can you wait? You could get one of those lesser sets (relatively speaking) but one thing no name off brand stuff usually has in common is garbage shafts in the woods and almost as garbagey shafts in the irons. For $100 you really can't go too far wrong, but how well do you know what's available form other used golfing sources? In one day you could probably do a quick scan of the sporting goods sections of almost every Goodwill, Value Village, and Salvation Army in your town and gauge whether or not these sets are a good deal. In the process you might find something even better piece by piece and throw together your own bag - bag included,  A lot of people dump old(er) equipment at the end of the season and they can't be bother dealing with kijiji or craigslist - they just donate it. Check it out.

I hadnt thought of those options, I didnt know Value Village and such even had that kind of stuff. I'll probably drop by some to check it out. It's just that I really wanted to have a set and play at least one more round before the season ends. I'm not exactly sure when that is but it starts getting real cold in November and with the whacky weather lately, you cant really predict anymore. I guess that still gives me a month and a half so maybe I'll hang on. Hopefully I can find another set similar to the Cobras or something close. Thanks again for your help.
