It is a hassel. I dont have a 5, but I have an SG4. When its working (which is not often) its great. Targets are usually spot on and distances are perfect. But its usually not working well. I would not have bought it had I known of the issues. The damn thing has a mind of its own. I dont even use it anymore cause I just dont have confidence that its going to work.

I think if I could do it all over again, I would seriously look at the Garmin.

I have used the SG5 for 2 years now, no problems whats so ever with it.  I really don't have a problem with the year fee or downloading courses.  The subscription fee is less than one green fee and I tend to play the same 20 courses, so I have been very happy with it.

Have had my sg5 for two years, the sg3 before that, almost 3. Zero problems with either. Yearly fees seems to be a personal/religious position, as several people I know who bitch about it blow more than the annual fee on beer and junk in a weekend. Seems kinda stupid, but hey, to each his own.  :)

I have about 12 courses on mine, I don't play out of state (or seldom out of town), so I never have to load courses. Just my situation of course.

I still prefer the hassle free operation of my Garmin Approach G5.  All courses are preloaded, and updates are free.  Just pop in the batteries and go.

What i found is that the garmin was 5 yards different than the skycaddie my friends have both. what one is right it kinda makes you wonder. I think the garmins work great and thats cool you dont have to download stuff and pay but skycaddie claims they walk the course and are more accurate.

With regards to accuracy, I can only speak to my personal experience. When I bought my original sg3, I was more than a little skeptical, so I drug along my laser for about 3 months. To compare apples to apples, I would always laser the front of the green, or a bunker because there is no way the gps can give specific yardage to the pin as it's placement varies. In summary, every yardage I shot with the laser was never more than 3 yards difference than the gps. This within the variance spec'd by Skycaddie. Most of the time, they were within a yard or two of each other, or dead on. Good enough for me, but as I stated, I can only speak to my own personal experience.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
