I've got a swing problem. According to my golf instructor, I raise my back foot up before my clubhead reaches the ball. As a result, my whole body turns and my clubhead reaches the ball slightly open causing the ball to go 70-80y with my 7i. I've tried keeping my back foot down while swinging but I feel like it's hampering my swing after i've made contact with the ball. Any advice and drills that you guys have that can help?

My first thought... you may need to see a different pro.

Without seeing you swing a club I am not a fan of random advice. I would say that if you go online and look at the swing sequence of pro's and instructors they all have there back heel raised (or starting to raise) at impact. It is part of a proper weight shift to your front side.

My only suggestion (again, because I have not seen your swing) would be that if your are pulling your head and body out of the shot (letting your head go past the ball before contact) it would lead to a similar result... and I was serious about getting a new pro.

I agree. All golf swings involve rolling off the back foot, some golfers actively push off. The limit is that you finish on the ball of the foot and in balance. Perhaps this is about sequence and he believes you are spinning out. If you use to much legs you my either slide or spin out. This ruins timing and robs your upper body of the support it needs and destroys balance. I would ask for a better explanation about what he is seeing. If you are not happy with the answer find someone else.

Yup, I agree. He has told me to keep my hips from turning towards the target until after I've hit the ball. It's kind of difficult to describe as I'm relatively new to golf and I'm not too sure off all the terms like "hip rotation" and what not. He has shown me what I did wrong with his body as the "model" though.

I hope you misunderstood? It sounds like maybe he is an x factor proponent. Increasing resistance in the hips can increase distance, but the resistance is a back swing thought? Do you know anyone else who uses this teacher?

I would like to say Ernie Els But no, I'm in this "junior golf foundation" in the club and he teaches about five other people. I don't mean increasing resistance in the hips, I meant just preventing the hips from turning towards the target until the golf ball has been struck.

There isn't a pro golfer or any decent golfer who hits the ball while their hips are parallel to with the target line.

Your hip rotation is where the power comes from not from the swinging of your arms. Like most good things in life, it's all in the hips baby!

To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
