I don't like to make my ball it just seems to make it look used. I prefer to buy logo over runs or keep it in the fairway

My buddy however always marks his with a "sombrero". Seems silly to me as he losses them faster than he can mark them. It stems from 10 years ago when he found "his ball" 100 yards farther than he's able to hit it. So any of you who finds a noodle with a red marking with a sombrero in IL or FL or AZ you saw it here first. And believe me there are 100's of them

I've never understood where people make this stuff up from. There is no rule stating you must mark a ball.

I didn't make anything up. I did make a mistake. Not every single ball is lost. My the point is, if you mark your ball you don’t lose it because you can’t identify it. I would never tee it up against anybody without marking it. I gave you rep points for calling me on this. Thanks. I learned something. "27/10 Player Unable to Distinguish His Ball from Another Ball Q. A and B hit their tee shots into the same area. Both balls were found but, because A and B were playing identical balls and neither had put an identification mark on his ball, they could not determine which ball was A’s and which was B’s. What is the ruling? A. Since neither player could identify a ball as his ball, both balls were lost — see Definition of “Lost Ball.” This incident underlines the advisability of the player putting an identification mark on his ball — see Rules 6-5 and 12-2." http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/books/decisions/dec12.html http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/books/decisions/dec27.html#27/10 12-2. Identifying Ball The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball. 6-5. Ball The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball. http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/bo...es/rule06.html Sincerely, Mike (someone who has not played a casual round since 1970) P.S. I play against pricks for money and they'll call you on everything.

Best, Mike Elzey

Brand, color, and even a marking like a scratch or a scuff are enough to properly identify a ball. Since golf is a game of honor, if I'm playing a Titleist Pro V1x 4 with a small wedge scuff on it, and we find a ball of that type in the area of my drive, it's my ball.

If for some reason another guy in my foursome has the same number, I use another number. Marking is an extra level of protection from the one-in-a-thousand (or million) times where you can't identify your ball by brand/name/model/color.

I mark my Titleist (#5,6,7,8) with : 3 back dots to the left of the number, 3 black dots to the right of the number, and than I use a yellow sharpie to highlight the number Titleist logo and the writting on the side of the ball.

That's how I mark my Titliest!

I mark mine sometimes. When I do, its 3 red dots in a triangle on the side of the number, or sometimes 5 dots over the company name.

I go with three blue dots to the lower left of the ball number on my Pro V1s (don't care what number) in the shape of a V, for my middle name.

Marking your ball is clutch; I've had people take them, I've had players challenge that a ball in thick rough is mine, sometimes people putt the wrong ball when, for whatever reason, you weren't even paying attention, etc. It protects you from the most irritating way possible to lose strokes - someone else taking your ball.

I never used to mark my ball... i found it distracting... most balls have a line for alignment anyhow. however, i just bought one of those sweet spot finders and markers.. wanted to see if it worked. any thots on those things?

    • Day 11, 1/11/26.  Today was putting, along about 6' of carpet, with coins on the ground to keep me cognizant of what I'm doing.  I think this is the at-home drill from LSW. (Ugh, missed two of the last four days -- 1/10 and 1/8)
    • Day 9: 2026.01.11 Hit some balls at the range, concentrating on weight distribution at address, got some on film.
    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
