I am re gripping my irons for the first time and have a couple questions.  1st.  When i removed the old grips (golf pride tour velvet wrap) i noticed the size was 58.  also, there was 3-4 layers of tape.  I bought these clubs, mizuno t zoid, from a friend a few years back.  I was comfortable with the grips.  my middle and ring fingers touched comfortably.  My question is: I just bought some standard size golf pride new decade grips and i am wondering what the diameter difference will be when i put them on with 1 layer of tape?  I did remove the old tape.

2nd question:  I ordered a kit off ebay to re grip my clubs and the tape is 9" long.  Dont think that is going to cover the entire length of the grips.  Will this be ok?

I've been lurking here for a while and am glad i finally joined.  Lots of great information.

BiggDave - I just learned to regrip clubs this past year myself.  How many wraps of tape you use can definitely make a difference.  You might want to try just one club first, and see how it works for you with only one wrap of tape.  As for your second question, the length of the tape strips in the regrip kits are usually sufficient.  I've not had a problem with them not being long enough.

Here is a link to a "how to" video that I thought was a great help when I learned.  I followed the video instructions and ran it by my friend's father (who has done golf club repairs for 50+ years) and he said "yup, that's how to do it".

Good luck!

You should be absolutely alright with the length of the tape. When you wet the tape, it's going to soften it up, and when you slide the grip on, a lot of the excess stickiness is going to stick to the inside of the grip, so the area that the tape wouldn't usually cover will still have some tape residue on it to stick it to the shaft. With the amount of tape wraps on it, I would completely agree with tefunk and try out one club to see what you will like. If you do it, and decide that you don't like it, there is a way to take the grip off without having to cut it off. Just like how you slide the grip off with the solvent, it's the same way to get it off. The only thing different is you need some way to get the solvent in between the grip and the shaft when it's already stuck on. I know at the course that I work at we use a metal coat hanger to do this. The left or right part of the coat hanger we would crimp together until the diagonal part is very close to the bottom of the hanger. Then we cut off the rest of the coat hanger and bent the ends 90 degrees to create a handle. Once you have that tool created you can put it as far as you can into the grip, spread it apart, and put in as much solvent as you can, and then move it around to loosen it up and keep repeating the process until you can pull the grip right off. It can be a lot of work, but if you have an expensive grip, it can definitely save you some money.

    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
    • Day 23: Rained all day, so no ball hitting. Worked indoors on top of the backswing feel, and also putted around the living room working on bead.
    • Played Four Oaks in Dracut today going back to the 2 man scramble match play format. My brother and I shot a team 81 winning 3 and 2. Had so many good shots today using a more centered turn. Seems to have really iginited my golf game. We'll see if I can keep it going.
