I'd like to buy a new golf set and I'd like some suggestions. I got into golf mid-season last year and started going fairly often. I made it out about 20 times. I've improved a lot and am beginning to be more consistent - currently shooting about 100 - 110 each round. I drive usually about 230 - 250, with a bit of a slice, although I've seemed to limit the slice since I've been working this out at the range. To be honest, I'm not sure what other information would be helpful. I'm looking for clubs that are forgiving and provide good distance. Also something that would last me a while. I don't want to upgrade my clubs again as I improve, for at least 4 or 5 years. I'm not overly concerned with price, but maybe you could give a few examples in different price ranges?

I have a few additional questions:

- When are the best deals? toward the end of the season, during the winter?

- What other characteristics do I need to consider? like what amount of flex would I want? I\m 6'0"... does my height come into play for length of the club?

A set of clubs I was looking at was the Cobra S3 Max... they say they have a large sweet spot, which would be great for me. I just don't hear Cobra as often as other brands, so not sure about their reputation.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks guys,

Peter

Cobra has a good reputation in the golf world and the S3 Max that you mentioned wouldn't be bad clubs for a beginner.  You'll want something that would fall into the game improvement or super game improvement categories (GI or SGI).  Best bet is to get some sort of static fitting to figure out if you need longer clubs and if the lie angle should be adjusted.  Also, you may want to go to a golf shop with a launch monitor to find your swing speed and try to figure out the flex you'll need.

Rockbottomgolf.com, globalgolf.com, and 3ballsgolf.com are all great sites for decent equipment at a good price so you may want to check them out after you figure everything else out.  Hope this helps.

Do not buy anything until you put in some time at the local golf shop.  Go in and speak with the staff tell them about your game and then hit a ton of stuff.  I almost bought the new Cobra Amp irons and they are really nice and long.  They are game improvement if you can stand all the orange.  S3 irons got really good reviews from what I read.  It usually takes months for me to settle on a set of irons.  As a first time Ping owner they make an amazing product and they last a long time from what I hear.  Try to only stick with reputable websites when buying clubs, the fake market is booming.  I would hit them at a local shop and if you can find them cheaper online then do that.

I would agree with Jazzfan, spend some time at the local golf shop and try out a variety of clubs.  Go in with an open mind and try clubs from a variety of groups.  Try a super game improvement iron like the Callaway Raxr H XL or the Mizuno JPX 800 HD, try a game improvement iron like the Ping g20 or the Taylormade RocketBallz or the Titleist AP1.   For fun try a better player iron like the Titleist AP2 or the Mizuno MP 59, it will give you some prespective on where you need to get to for a better game.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
