Hey guys,

Im finally looking into getting my own set of clubs this year. Last year i went to the driving range weekly with my friends and used his fathers clubs. I think this year its time to get my own.

Im a beginner so i dont need the best of the best. I would like to keep my spendings within 200$. Other than that, i dont really know enough to be picky. Just looking for clubs that can help me learn the game.

Im a male, and am left handed as well.

thanks

I would look to buy a set of used clubs. You can check out ebay or a couple other sites.

One thing I would recommend is getting somewhat of a fitting.

Shaft Length

Shaft Flex

Club Lie

These will be important to help improve your game. You can get them done at many major golf facilities for a reasonable price. And some places will do it for free if you buy your clubs through them. Of course these are only suggestions so take what you feel is important and leave the rest! Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks for the info.

I have a dicks sporting goods close by and i plan on taking a trip up there tomorrow to check out some clubs. I saw some complete sets on sale for 150-200 bucks which is right in my price range.

I have little to no knowledge about golf equipment. So im not sure what the terms "shaft flex" and "Club Lie" mean. I'll have to do some research :P.

Are there any brands that stick out when talking about beginners clubs? I know my friend got his first set last year and they were walter hagen MS2's.

Again, appreciate the help man! Ill definitely keep it all in mind :D

I don't want to be one to say what you should do, because it's your decision.  But, I would stay away from the Hagen set.  I know it's cheap and comes with everything, but they are not any good in my opinion.  My brother bought a set of them because he was just picking up the game.  I told him he'd be better off spending $200 on a better used set.  That said, a year later after trying out a better set of clubs he realized how much of a difference it made.  He bought a set of Adam irons, and his game improved by about 10 strokes over this past year.  He's still a 30 handicap, but it's much better than a 40 and he is much happier now that he is hitting better shots.

You noted you were a lefty.  I've heard people have a harder time finding clubs being a lefty.  However, I wonder if that means lefties have a harder time getting rid of them as well?  I'm not really sure.

I think Rednax made a good point about buying a decent used set.  Is there a store around you that sells used equipment?  I know GolfGalaxy does, and most pro shops usually have used stuff sitting around.  What area are you from?

Check this used set out... would make an excellent beginners set.  I know it's not lefty... but the point is you can get a really nice used set if you keep you eye out.

About a year ago I decided to pick the game up again and I was looking at some complete sets. My father bought me a set of Tommy Armours for my birthday and I love them. They are by no means the best clubs, but I really enjoy them. It's something to think about if you're set on buying a complete set. http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4023754&cp;=3052500.3053437.2273504&fbc;=1&f;=Brand%2F141%2F&fbn;=Brand%7CTommy+Armour&lmdn;=Brand&parentPage;=family

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
