I used to drop from the top and use hands to draw, now I'm told to come down the line with neutral hands. Has it all changed?

Hello, new to this and it kinda hops over from a thread on equipment but here goes...

Got pretty good as a yongster, played a nice draw and down to 4 h'cap. Stopped playing for a long time: marraige, kids, job etc. coming back to it now. Was playing OK, but streaky. Went for a lesson looking for consistency and assurance of sound fundamentals. Also looking to lower ball flight.

Summary was, nice old time swing, you drop from the top and then use quick hands to give you a draw: in-to-out and shallow angle of attack. Timing is key to make it all work.  (all true).

Instructional advice was to come back down the same plane (not drop it inside) with more neutral hands. Will give me steeper angle allowing me to trap the ball and off it goes. Less reliance on timing, more repeatable, and actually some distance to be had too - simple.

Now this all makes geometric sense to me, just kinda goes contrary to what I had been taught as a youngster. Hence my question - has it all changed?

Thanks in advance, enjoying my return to the game and still love Tom Watson's swing and attitude.

im in this predicament right now. i can hit my driver straight by just turning my shoulders on a flat plane and keeping the driver plane relatively flat but i can also do it by dropping it in the slot. i like the second one because the other one i sometimes snap hook and the second tends to produce better distance.

It hasn't. There are the pro's who have to have it one way and change your swing to theirs. Look for a pro who is willing to improve your swing and not change it. Ways I found to hit the ball low with the driver, hit more down on it like a punch. but if you don't have fast hands don't do it cause it will slice hard.

Rest In Peace my son. I will miss you. 5/12/94-1/29/13 Future Tour Pro Committed suicide thanks to the sand trap. Go to hell to all of you.

    • Day 45 (27 Dec 25) - played at one of the sisters courses to my home course.  Solid session through the bag….of the 7 pars, 4 were up and down 1 putts (wedges were dialed in) from 6’ or less.  Off the tee - solid, irons were consistent even it a bit under on distances.  Course management was on - stayed the course even with a few offline recovery shots required…
    • Day 453 - 2025-12-27 Two things today for about 48 balls (I like to hit three or six balls at a time before taking a small break to pick them up): Right leg stays flexed a bit, internal rotation on the backswing. Kept my eyes looking at the ball and trusted that the backswing was fine.
    • Day 137 12-27 Worked on wider backswing today and tried to remain flowy. Recorded face on and down the line. Swing is looking better but I mentally felt off today, just frustrated. Tomorrow's a new day!
    • Day 8 - 2025-12-27 45 minutes of short game work at local muni, mostly putting work. Trying to get lots of reps in with consistent quality tempo.
    • I guess I'll stay at -16 for this year's challenge.  I never birdied holes 7, 13 (the 2 hardest holes) in 2025.  Also had a couple Eagle putts on the par 5's, but didn't convert either time.  Looking forward to 2026, though!
