I used to play golf every week but now I play very infrequently (about 4 rounds a year). I want to start playing more and I'm thinking about getting a new set of irons. I'm an 11 or 12 handicap right now but I think I have the ability to get down to 7 or 8 if I start playing more regularly. That being the case, what do you all think about the Titleist 775CB irons? I have no intention of playing blades, and I think I'm a little beyond playing big-time game improvement irons, so I like the idea of playing something that's sort of between Player's clubs and Game Improvement clubs.

Does anyone out there have experience with these clubs or with Titleist in general? What other clubs would you recommend for a low double digit handicapper trying to move to single digits?

Thanks!

804s vs 775s anyone?

I know that the 775s are an upgrade... but is it worth the money to get 775s over 804s?

I know that the Cobra 2300 I/M irons are aimed at the mid - low handicapper. These are last years models so they should not be too expensive. I tried them last year and they felt great to me, but I chose to go with a little more game improvement because I am still a pretty high handicapper... I would try these if you can, I was impressed...

I would give the X-Tour forged (2006) and the X-20 Tour (2007) a swing before you set your mind on anything.

Had a chance to hit the CG Red the other day too. Not in the market for irons, but it had a nice look and feel to it.

I have a handicap of 12 with aspirations of a single digit handicap by the end of the year. I just bought the X-20 tours but before I did, I hit evey club I could get my hands on. While I hit the 775CB's well, they just didn't feel right. My choice came between the X-20's and the r7 TP's. Both were very nice. Since you were a single digit handicaper, you may want to swing the Mizuno's MP-60's. Very nice sticks.

I think the good advice everyone is giving is you need to hit them. I just bought a new set of irons after playing my previous set for 7 years. I tried the Callaway X-20 tour, X forged, Titleist 775CB, 755, Taylor Made r7TP and a 2 or 3 others (I looked at the golf digest hotlist, golf mag list, reviews on this site and others to figure out where to start). My process was taking 2 models to the range and hit balls with both for an hour or so and decide which I liked better. Then I would take that club and another repeat, and in that way I got it down to the club I liked the best (this was a 4 or 5 week process). Funny thing is, I would have put the clubs I ended up with (Titleist 755s) at the bottom of my list going in and the first club I eliminated I thought was going to be the one I loved...

I'm about a 13 and absolutely love my 775cb irons. Very crisp contact with the turf and just a great look and feel to them. I would definitely recommend giving them a look.
kind of depends how well u hit your irons....do u need help getting ball in the air....as the 775 have more offset and weight on bottom...I would go with the 755 which have plenty of offset and forgiving...the 775 seem more approp for bogey golfers....I have been very happy with my R7 TPs.....

The best advice you've been given regarding your question is to try different irons in order to empirically determine which iron/shaft combination works best for you. These days this is not a hard task, especially if you live in or around an urban center. That being said, I purchased a set of the 775s in March, 2006. I have been thoroughly pleased with my purchase. I wanted to move from super game improvement irons to the game improvement category. The shape of the irons more closely resemble a players cavity back, most especially in the 6 through Gap Wedge. The irons have a very pleasing look at address. You can work the irons, if you have that ability. When well struck, they feel as soft as butter. When poorly struck, you know it; perhaps not as much feedback as less forgiving clubs, but enough to let you know how you're doing. The best thing you can do is to try a variety of irons. I can say that this duffer really likes the 775s. Good luck to you in your search.
