How often do you encounter people who smoke a joint during a round?

I never encountered that during a round but as long as they were not doing it right next to me I wouldn't really care.

One SHOULDN'T be illegal, and the other causes a far more debilitating effect. Plus, alcohol is worse for you in just about EVERY facet (except for your lungs i suppose haha). I don't smoke, but it shouldn't be illegal, and people that partake in it shouldn't be any more looked down upon than someone who drinks, or someone who smokes cigarettes (which is far worse for your health than marijuana BTW.)

and in many jurisdictions, marijuana is a violation, which is not a crime.

And in many jurisdictions, it's completely legal notwithstanding federal law, which the Obama administration has taken the position they would not enforce against people abiding by state law. People with med. marijuana cards in CA, NV, et al can smoke all the dope they want legally, and they can smoke it on the golf course if that's what suits them. Legally. I don't drink or smoke dope anymore, but I'd much rather be around folks smoking dope than people drinking alcohol.

I disagree. Pot is far worse than alcohol.  When you buy a beer you are buying a sealed beverage from a store and know exactly what's in it.  The beverage company is legally responsible for the contents in the unopened bottle.  Pot, unless purchased legally with a prescription or home grown is a complete unknown.  You have no idea what pesticides or other "additives" were sprayed on it, the seller/dealer has no obligation to ensure the purity or safety of the product.   If you're growing it yourself, then you're really breaking the law so we won't even include that as an option in this discussion.

I'm having a tough time understanding how you can minimize the effect of inhaling unfiltered smoke and holding it will do to your lungs.  As for other facets, beer does have calories which could lead to obesity, but according to those that "partake", pot gives you the munchies so the caloric intake is probably about the same.  Beer does stress your liver but drank in moderation, it's not much worse than taking 2 tylenols.  In terms of damage to the brain, I'll take my chances with beer compared to the unknown assortment of chemicals pot can be sprayed with.

Most stoners I knew growing up in HS didn't amount to much as adults, not all, but most, so I'm not sure if there's a cause and effect conclusion to be made there or not. Based on personal experience, the beer drinkers turned out much more successful than the pot smokers.

All that said, I'm all for legalizing pot so they can tax the sale of it and stop raising personal income tax to pay for the costs for under productice indivuals who sit at home and smoke weed and drink beer all day while we're out working.

Unless you have a very sensitive nose, the smell of beer isn't as nasty as the smell of pot (even worse than cheap cigars), nor can you get a contact high from smelling beer.

If guys need their pot fix during a round of golf, they should bring pot brownies.   They can make a fresh batch the night before and eat all they want while they play.  No one will know, it won't stink up the course, no 2nd hand smoke issues and they minimize the risk of getting arrested.

A 'contact high'? Second hand smoke outdoors? Seriously..... I wasn't suggesting that anyone break the law. I was saying that there are places where that risk doesn't exist. In thoses places, people who are allowed to smoke pot legally should be able to do so without anyone giving them a hard time. Same with cigarettes. If you have a problem with any of that, get laws passed in your community that prohibit those activities. Until then, folks should learn to mind their own business. I've been dealing with jerk offs drinking too much on the golf course for years. Nobody says jack when two guys grab a second (or third) six pack at the turn or pound down three doubles at the nineteenth hole, but the fact is that many of them hop in their cars after a round and they're legally drunk. You could stand outside any clubhouse and legitimately take keys away from multiple people after every round. Do you? They're a bigger health/safety risk than second hand smoke. And the smell? I think someone who reeks of beer is pretty nasty, as do most of the folks I know that aren't drinking. I don't drink or smoke, cigs or dope. As long as it's legal or I'm at zero risk of getting in trouble, I say live and let live. I can always take my business elsewhere if I disagree with a company's policies re: smoking. You can, too. EDIT: None of the folks that I play with regularly drink alcohol or smoke dope while they play...they actually care about their golf game., though I understand and respect that people have different motives while playing.

I'm with you on all points with regards to beer drinking on the course (I don't smoke, drink or use drugs ever), my post was about pot versus beer in general not just related to the golf course.

As for DWI, and obnoxious drunks on the course I'm with you there.  A local 18 year old girl was just killed by a drunken idiot that was driving 100 mph and was 3x the legal limit.  I'd be happy to leave my keys at the pro shop and have to have my blood alcohol levels tested after a round of golf before they hand me the keys back to keep drunks off the road.  Obnoxious drunks on the golf course ruin it for everyone, unfortunately golf courses don't employ bouncers.

alcohol is definitely worse than marijuana.  Not even close.

You never read of potheads getting all stoned and getting into bar fights or vandalizing the neighborhood or even aggressive driving.

marijuana makes people lazy

alcohol makes some people violent, some people aggressive, and causes a greater clouding of judgment than marijuana.

I smoke before every round but never on the course unless it's dead. Makes me focus better and I'd consider myself a above average golfer. Hoping to go under par this year for 18. I'd never want to put my playing partners in that position. Btw not illegal for me, it's hilarious to read the stigma still associated with marijuana use demonstrated in some of the posts. I've always been an athlete and I think marijuana use has done nothing but help me.

great find of marijuana related criminal activity.  One of them involves weapons and larger scaling trafficking, and the other two involve synthetic drugs that are not marijuana.  Way to show how marijuana use causes people to get into bar fights and drive aggressively and vandalize property the same way alcohol does.

Well in all fairness, the one I posted did involve someone who was driving under the influence of marajuana.  And it's not like I had to look far as that news story is dated today.

driving under the influence of marijuana cracks me up.  Usually they are pulled over for driving too slow.

Alcohol cause greater impairment to judgment and more aggressive tendencies than marijuana.  You can debate which is worse, but you cannot really argue that point.

I find nothing funny about people driving while under the influence.  Someone hits a loved one of mine doing it and they won't need a lawyer, if you catch my drift.

yeah, I'm sure you are really the king of vigilante justice.

anyway, you seem to be a straight mr. rules guy, probably think looking at porn on the internet violates obscenity laws in this nation.

go ahead and keep telling yourself that marijuana is a horrible thing.  or you could smoke some for a few months and learn for yourself.

I'm not even an active marijuana smoker.  But these people who are talking about it like it is a crime or horrible thing are too funny.  bunch of NERDS.
