Hey all,

I've only been playing a few months. Wife accidentally got me into by taking me to a driving range for fun.

I'm still very green and I've only been to a course once. Between classes and work I've only really had time to go to driving ranges and work on my swing every now and then.

I have an older set of Tommy Armour 845s irons and until this point an old dented beat up driver.

This is where my question comes in. Since the driver is the only thing I actually need since my irons are fine for me to play with at the moment I've been on and off Craiglist checking out what I can. I've violated one rule I always see, though. I haven't been fitted for anything. I just get sidetracked and thought I would get something cheap for now and worry about fitting later.

Well today I was browsing around Craigslist and actually came across a deal I couldn't pass up based on reviews and the price of the club. A younger man was selling an R11S and I ended up talking on the phone with him and he offered it to me for $200. (This isn't the problem, I checked out the serial and had a friend check out the club with me and it seems 100% legit. Also, I gathered the young mans father is loaded and buys him clubs on a whim). My problem is I ignored the fact it has a stiff shaft. I've only played with a regular flex shaft.

I got it this evening and haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I plan on making some time this weekend to check it out. Since I've never had my swing speed measured I don't know if it will screw me over in the end or if it will be negligible. If it ends up hurting me I wanted to know if you guys had any recommendations for shafts. I figure since I saved so much I could always just pick up a good shaft if necessary. Other than that I'm not too worried as I can change up a lot of the other options on the club if it doesn't agree with me.

Also, I'm new. Hi!

Stiff flex shafts are great for golfers with 90+ mph swings.  Your best bet is to find a golf store that can measure your swing speed.  If you are above 90mph or really close to it I wouldn't spend the money to reshaft the clubs.  If your swing speed is significantly below 90mph then looking into getting new shafts that are regular flex may be ideal for you.  As far as ruining your golf swing by using stiff flex shafts, I wouldn't worry about it to much.  You may be more consistent with regular flex shafts, but stiff shafts won't kill your game.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
