My driver swing speed is now approx. 100-105 mph. Looking at the Golfsmith sale I see good prices on the Dunlop Super Loco, Precept Laddie Extreme and Maxfli Redmax. Are these low compression balls an ideal choice for my swing speed? Yes, no, maybe?

It depends on what you want the ball to do. Are you looking for distance or more control around the greens?

The low compression balls are good for slower swing speeds, yours isn't really slow and although these low compression balls will be good off the tee you might want a bit more spin for more control around the greens.

With your swing speed you shouldn't have much trouble getting through the middle layers of a multi-layer ball and getting the power to the core of the ball off the tee. So it would be like hitting a low compression ball. Yet around the greens you will be able to get more spin our of the ball to hold it on the greens. You might want to look at Nike Ignite or the HX Hot, they both 3 piece balls but don't cost as much as say a Pro-V1, HX tour or a Nike One.

Thanks for the thorough reply Beung,

My main concern was getting too much height or ballooning on my drives with the lower compression balls. I would certainly like a ball that would spin more and hold more greens. With a 19 index and dropping steadily I think I am ready for some decent mid-priced balls. My game nor my budget is ready for the upper tier 3-piece balls.

I will probably be ridiculed for recommending them but try Top Flite's D2 Feel ball.

I have about the same swing speed as you and I love them. They are long off the tee, putt very well and spin quite well around the green. No, they aren't a ProV1 but they do have a nice soft feel around the green.

Best part? They are about $15/15pk. Yup, a buck a ball. They are inexpensive enough you should give them a try.

I never ever thought in a million years I'd play a ball with "Top Flite" on it but on a whim I tried these and now I play them all the time.

No rec golfer, no matter how good you are "needs" to play a $6 ball. The key is, and I have told all my friends that I play with, is to use the same ball whenever possible.

There are enough variables when playing golf, everything from the swing to the environment that why not control the things you have control over. If you play the same ball all the time, you know how it will play off the tee, from the rough, the short stuff and the greens.

Personally I don't think I have enough "touch" to feel the difference between most balls but I want to know how much the ball is going to spin, especially around the greens.

Define "'rec' golfer."

After playing with almost every type of ball imaginable, and

then playing Titleist, I can tell you there's a difference. If I ever play a serious round again, you can be damn sure it will be with Titleist Pro V1's and NXT Tours. I get more distance and more spin around the green - it's just all around a better ball than a feathery or a shag.
