Hi, I recently was custom fit by a local golf shop for a set of Ping Rapture irons. According to the results I was given a set of Orange Dots (2* flat). Doing further research I see that the color chart should put me in the Red Dots (1* flat)....and doing further digging I see that Ping's online fit is the same putting me in Red.

After using these clubs for quite a few rounds and lots of practice I have noticed a few things....

1. I need to stand further away from the ball to avoid shanking it off the hosel right. I do get decent accuracy and distance with this set up but it is admitedly uncomfortable.
2. Even though I am standing quite a distance away from the ball at address I see that the ball marks on the club face are in the lower right hand corner of the grooves. (while looking at the face towards the right bottom at the hosel) This is consistant across the whole set.

So I guess my question for the group is are the clubs too flat? Or is there something I am missing. I realize that I am not good enough to repeat my swing all the time but this just seems odd to me that the ball marks on the grooves are consistantly in the same place.

Any ideas or comments are appreciated.

Seth

Are these clubs shorter/longer than your previous clubs? I am not extremely familiar with clubmaking, but I have heard things. I met a gentleman who had ping I5's custom, and it took him a few rounds to get used to. Maybe your just not used to them yet, but idk. Also, length could be an issue. Check it out.

dynamic fitting will be more accurate than a static test. The online test is a static test and doesn't take into account hand position at impact

Lie angle should have no meaningful impact on whether you hit the ball off the center or the heel. It can, however effect the direction of your shots . I wouldn't worry at all about the extra degree unless you clear up your contact issues and see balls going consistently to the right.

A change in shaft length, or your swing/setup are more likely to be causing your visitation of the "lateral". (I've hit too many of the things to dare utter the s-word). As with most things in golf, this is an affliction that can be counter-intuitively be caused by standing too *far* from the ball and reaching to get back to it. It's helped me in the past to make a number of smooth practice swings at the range (with a long iron across my toes) and note carefully where I'm making impact. I then put a ball on that spot and try to make the same smooth swing to the same spot. It often takes a bit to get used to new irons, and you may have something different going on, but it's probably not the lie angle. Hope you figure it out soon.

Thanks for all the excellent input.

Part of what my clubfitter metioned when he had me hit my own clubs was that I slouched too much during my swing. He really wanted me to have a straighter posture with less bend at the knees and more bend at the waist. So my issue may just be dealing with that change and how these clubs were made. I have been hitting them very solid as of late. Perhaps the drill metioned above and some time with a pro can eleviate my mental and physical quirk.

I appreciate your time and input.

    • I've been putting whilst looking at the hole and it's definitely helped my distance control
    • I wonder if that is why my home course basically have no stakes now.  Not even markers.  It’s completely up to golfers to remember what is OB and hazard and how things used to be marked.     Even in tournaments, there is no marking and certain areas are played differently by different golfers who either don’t know better or use it to their advantage funny reading thru this with courses that actually have markers
    • is it though?????? "Millions of fans"?????
    • Great post, thanks for the informaiton. I try to avoid adding salt to anything I eat. I tend to add pepper on to my meals as opposed to salt. And I am trying to eat as clean on possible. On golf day, I eat 3 eggs for breakfast (pepper NO salt) and a salad for lunch, with grilled chicken thigs (pepper, garlic, no salt). I have been trying to avoid processed food, but we all slip. I also should have mentioned that the electrolyte packet calls for mixing with 16 oz of water, however I mix in 32 oz of water, so I dilute the electrolyte powder.
    • So if I read the news correctly, the PIF will not fund LIV after this season.  LIV is trying to find new funding and a number of players there are now asking about getting back to the Tour.    I am very, very concerned that Taylor Gooch will not have a place where he can make a jackass out of himself soon
