Wear and tear on irons. Also, new irons? Cleveland 588 or Ping?

Hi all.

been a lurker for a while, coming out now... :-)

I'm 55, play twice a week year round, practice at least once more per week. Currently 14 hdcp, low last year 9. Best round past year, 70. I expect to shoot in the high 70s, low 80s but expect to improve further this year.

Currently playing Cleveland CG16 Tour black irons that are about 2 years old. I've already replaced 3 of the wedges because I wore the grooves off of them. I hit the ball hard and play in AZ, so there are plenty of rocks and sand to wear a clubface. I like black or matte clubs; don't like shiny. Too easy to scratch.

A few things...

One, my PW is wearing out quickly. I'll either need to replace it or replace the set of irons. Also noticed that the other short irons are getting some wear as well. Should I expect to see this kind of wear after 2 years? I would kinda expect so, but wanted to check.

Two; I like these irons, but have not played with any other newer ones. I'm considering replacing the set with either the Cleveland 588s, Ping G25s, or Ping i20s. I consistently hear good things about the Pings but am a bit put off by the thick look, although I've never hit them outside of a store sim bay.

Any ideas what I should expect in the way of performance and durability if I move to any of these iron sets? Looking for real world experience with these or any comparable sets...

    • Day 314 - Putting some things together. Better grip/setup, fuller backswing, better finishing position. Filmed some swings, happy with the progress.
    • Day 130: did a stack session.
    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
