I'm at the point in my game going into this season where I'm starting to consistently shoot in the 100-105 range, hopefully breaking into the 90's and beyond this season.  I'm currently playing with a hybrid iron set from Nike (Sumo2) which are obviously very forgiving but as I've been playing more and more I like less and less the fact that they're hybrids from 5-7.  They also have some ridiculous level of off-set which was great when my common miss was a slice but now my biggest miss is a hook.

In any case I've been looking at picking up a set of more traditional GI/SGI irons for this season and I have a line on a set of MX-19's for under $150.  I know these clubs are a few years old at this point but I'm curious what people's thoughts are on how they compare to some of the newer irons out there.  I'm also looking at R7's but I believe they're the draw profile that I'm not that interested in, Nike SQ Machspeed's and  Cleveland CG7's.  Obviously the Nike's are the newest of that bunch but I'm less concerned with how new they are more about how they'll perform for someone at my skill level.  Any feedback/input would be greatly appreciated.

I think the MX-19 will probably be forgiving enough, and give you some room to "grow into" them. Don't really know much about the others, but IMO you can't go wrong with a set of Mizunos.

Forgot to say, make sure you have the right shafts for you swing too. Getting fit for my irons made a HUGE difference for me.

I appreciate the input.  I definitely love the feel of the newer Mizuno GI/SGI irons... I've hit both the JPX800 and 825 and they felt great I just wish I had the coin to drop on them right now.

My biggest concern is if it makes more sense to spend a bit more and maybe get something like a burner 2.0 cleveland CG14/16 which can be found at around the $300/350 range right now.  I know there's a ton of new tech going on but since I'm still playing at such a high score and working on swing flaws how much of a difference would that really make for me?

19s are great irons.  Very forgiving and easy to hit.

As for whether it would be worthwhile to spend more for a newer set of irons, thats really a personal decision.  You arent going to notice a huge difference in terms of performance but you may like the newer ones better, so its really your call.

There a great club I had them for the last 6 years. Very forgiving and get the ball high into the air and a soft landing. I have just bought the Rocketblades and I can see the difference but I get that there is a big price difference also.

If you are hitting around the 100 mark at the minute I would look at a different club to give you a bit of motivation also as depending on how often you play you might not see a huge difference in changing to the mx 19.

depending on were you are looking for golf clubs you could pick up a cheap enough pair of Callaway diablos that are very forgiving also and very nice to hit.

also, another thing to consider is that the hook might be a new swing fault, and not because of the offset of the clubs.  I had the same problem.  In the process of trying to self diagnose my slice, I ended up with an over the top swing that also managed to get my club face closed, so my miss developed into a low hooking shot.

After taking a few lessons, I correct my swing path and Chicken wing and now can hit those mega offset hybrids and get a small draw with those.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Not to mention on the Rocketbladez that the shafts are longer and the lofts are stronger.  Apples to oranges.

I'm not denying that but it also comes down to the player and the way they swing the club. Every club is going to be different to the next just like every player.

The point I was trying to make is that for the strokes that lisevolution is hitting now I would suggest maybe looking at a different set to the MX 19 as yes they will help as they are a game improvement club but he wouldn't see much difference in score. I can only go from what I have seen in Ireland in relation to prices but in my opinion but is down to them that if they were to stretch the boat out a bit more they could see a bigger improvement for the extra money.

I appreciate all the input on this thread. I decided to pass on the Mizuno's for now and instead keep working on my swing. I talked about it with the pro I'm working with and he suggested I wait keep developing a more repeatable swing and then get fit for a set either at the end of this season or beginning of next. The pull is definitely a development of fixing what was a slice. When I come through to quickly I yank it. When I'm on time it's a nice high draw.

I'll add that when I was a little higher handicap, maybe around 18 I bought a set of Mx-23's and found them pretty unforgiving. I think your pro gave you some great advice.

    • I've been a Footjoy man for several years.  They last well, but I also rotate between 4-6 shoes (yes, I have several pairs of golf shoes).  I often buy insoles with each new pair too.   Then they're comfortable!
    • Day 187 (05 Nov 24) -  Got in some time with the 4&5 hybrids in the backyard - hitting hard foam balls.  Rehearsing preshot routine, focusing on tempo, by reenacting some of the shorter par 4s at my regular course - hybrid off the tee, hybrid approaches.
    • Day 36 - 2024-11-05 Went downtown for a little over three hours. 90 minutes of that was doing other stuff, but I got a little practice in. Some messing with GSPro (v3 is now out) and the settings, some chipping, some little stuff. Not a ton of full swing stuff, and what I did there was mostly backswing stuff.
    • Great point - my experience from the 2004 Oakland Hills Ryder Cup. I got 4 tickets for Friday, had some buddies go with me and we saw shots on about 4 holes. You really have to decide who you want to see, then try to jump ahead to see them somewhere on the back 9. If you got into the grandstands then you'd likely have a good view only of that green/tee box.  Sidenote: I knew a guy who was a member at Birmingham CC, and he was a marshal on the 18th hole and he was out there all day, both morning and afternoon groups. And he had 1 group play the hole in the morning and another in the afternoon. Huge corporate tents around the 18 green, along with some grandstands. And you get to see maybe 6 or 7 shots counting the approach and putts.  Learned my lesson, I have no issue in going to another Ryder Cup, especially at the prices they want for 2025. I think it was $40 for a practice round (went to one of those as well) and maybe $75 for Friday/Saturday, $100 for Sunday. And it was "limited" to 20,000 tickets/day, which is still very crowded to follow 4 pairings around the course.
    • Of course he can score in the low 70's in a really short course driving it that short. But the course rating is going to be in the 60's so is not like he can call himself a scratch player.
