i have always had a problem with it, but i got a new, well new to me used adams fast this season it has become more pronounced. I feel like i am openingmy hips way to early and its pushing the club head out just that l;ittle bit to much. It also could be mental that i have a new driver and wanna bash golf balls that extra 15 yrds.i am at a loss right now! i don't want to just take the easy fix of setting up farther from the ball if it is only going to perpetuate a bad swing. Any thoughts or drills would be greatly appreciated !!!

Strange, I was in the same boat last week. I was shanking and couldn't figure it out. Then I tried something new on my setup. I started addressing my ball from the toe of my driver. I aimed to return the club from the inside and hitting the ball from the 3-6 o'clock range. It worked - no more shanking.

This can be caused by a number of things. One thing that I would do to start off with is simply back off of the ball as you assumed you would need to do. Make a slower backswing and slower downswing as well (decrease your overall tempo so you're not bashing the ball).

Also, you can try a pre-shot routine such as this:

While placing both of your feet together, align yourself to the ball so that an "imaginary line" goes from the ball to the center of the line that your feet are creating (this will put the ball presumably right on your chin/center. Slide your driver out to the ball while doing this so that you are set up at the proper distance from the ball (proper being comfortable and ideal for you - there's no set distance as everyone is different).

Then, simply turn your left foot out a little less than 45° until you have the feeling that you can get the proper hip-turn without losing balance.

Finally, simply step out with your right foot now to your comfortable setup width.

This is an easy way to practice ball placement in your stance where as long as you do not move your left foot prior to your shot, your ball will be placed off of your lead foot's heel (reverse the foot turn and step outs if you're LH).
