Switching out 4i for hybrid

I know it doesn't matter, but it's a bit of a blow to the ego. I can hit my 5i and up fairly consistantly and well most of the time (when I've been practicing...). Recently got a 21* 913H to replace my 3i and I hit that well too. My 4i however is a damn mess. At the range I flush 1 out of 5 balls. Because of this, I really only use my 4i for punches under trees. Being a fairly fit 30 year old, I feel like I should hit this club, but I'm considering swapping it out for a 23* 913H. Any other younger dudes who've done the same? Happy?

Dude... I'm 31, and I carry a *bleep*ing FIVE -hybrid...

The emotions you're experiencing are one of the biggest mental barriers to amateur golf success, i.e. the poorly-inspired desire to "man up." These same neuroses also lead to things like swinging too hard, buying stiff shafts when regulars will better suit your game, using a Pro-V1x when any mid-range ball will work just fine...

In other words: don't worry about it! If it helps your game, do it. Even if it means wearing a tutu...

Lol. Fair enough. I know I should, and chances are very good I will very soon. Guess my only question is whether there's any downside to hybrids compared to long irons (e.g. If by some miracle I did learn to hit a 4i well). I can't think of any...

The only real downside is not being able to keep it low with most hybrids. I don't think you bought one to keep it low though.

Lose the ego and go with whatever makes this game easier.  My irons are pretty much a set of hybrids (hollow irons) and I couldnt be happier with them.

Sure, Id love to have a set of forged blades but for right now Im loving the distance and launch of my MX-1000s.

      At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.

      That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.

      True, but as 15 year olds go, he has a much better chance of getting there than any of the rest of them. Kid can flat out play. He almost Monday'd into a PGA tour event a few weeks ago too. Missed in a playoff.

      I'd bet against him having much success as a pro, because of, you know… the odds. You don't want to be the best 15-year-old in the game. You want to be the best 25-year-old in the game.
