I'm thinking about reshafting my current driver as I am launching it quite high and thus potentially losing distance with the current spin rate being generated by my driver. I have a stock R580XD in 10.5* loft stiff.

I'm now trying to figure out whether or not investing $150 in a new shaft, grip and install would be worth my time/money in order to lower trajectory and spin rate.

Anyone have any positive experiences with reshafting their drivers to produce this same end result?

What brand of shaft did this for you?

Should I just buy a new driver with the proper shaft for my swing?

Thanks all.

Well, you can get a 580 XD on ebay for around $150, so spending $150 to upgrade doesn't sound like a lot of sense. I know a lot of people love the XD's though, so you would have to weigh your options. I would put the $150 toward a newer club personally.

yeah, put it toward a nwe club. I just got a nearly-new Titleist 905R with a

I forgot to mention that the reason why I am even thinking about reshafting my club other than wanting to lower the launch angle and spin rate is that I really love the 'feel' of the clubhead. I have tried other clubs from Callaway, Cleveland and Titleist and I have yet to like the feel of any of them that I tried.

Perhaps I will have to sacrifice this feel for the two things that I want... or rather 3 things if you include more distance!? If I can squeeze out another 10 to 20 yards on my drive I'm sure I'd shut up about all this while reaching in for one of my scoring irons for my approach!

I would think that one of the risks of reshafting the R580 XD is that you would lose that "feel" that you like so much. I have no idea what proportion of "feel" is allocated to the shaft as opposed to the clubhead, but the shaft definitely plays a role. I reshafted a Cobra 454 comp once (with a UST V2) and just ruined the way the club played (oops). All the signs pointed to that being the right shaft for the effect I was looking for, but once it was in there, I wasn't happy at all. On the other hand, I reshafted my Cobra SS 310 tour with an Aldila NV-65r, and I love it. Totally money. If I just looked at it financially though, the move would make no sense. You can buy SS310 tours on eBay for $15-$45 and the shaft was much more than that. I would try out a bunch of the newer drivers and see whether any of them feel right to you, and if they do, apply your $150 there.

I am in the same boat. I have a R580XD 10.5 and launch it a little high but I have the stock reg shaft in it. I have been looking around for a conforming R510 in a 9.5 loft but realise that I must do my homework on the shaft. If I get a head and then try similar clubs ie. 9.5 loft, with differing shafts do you think I will get a reasonably accurate assessment of ballflight?

Has anyone used an Aldila Gamer shaft before?

The Specs look similat to the NVS series but the price is less than half.

Here is the info form Aldila:

The Gamer Series consist of three unique shaft models, each designed to optimize launch angle and spin, for woods hybrid and irons and the performance demands of each unique club type. Versatility is also another key design characteristic of the Gamer Series of shafts. The New Gamer shafts are designed with adequate parallel sections in both shafts, tip and butt to accommodate a wide range of tip and butt trimming options, while maintaining hosel fit and grip size.

As long as you try and make the same swing on each club you test I think you can gage whether or not you are getting any variance in ballflight.

I started thinking more about this because I recently tried my buddy's Callaway X360 driver in a 10 degree and I forget what shaft was on it but it was definitely a more boring trajectory than mine and I outdrove myself by 10 to 30 yards on a few hits. I didn't quite like the way it felt but how can you argue with more yardage??? Now this driver is on sale here for $238 Canadian at Golftown... so this thread may all be a moot point really.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
