H there, I have the following set of MX Fli-Hi hybrids, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

The 2, 3 & 5 are steel shafts and the 4 is a Mizuno graphite.  I am considering reshafting all four clubs with Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue shafts for a higher launch or a similar hybrid shaft, I may slightly shorten the shafts too for more control.

These hybrids have quite a heavy head and I was wondering how this reshafting would affect the swingweight and feel of the club etc.

This is not something I would do myself but I think it's worth getting some advice before i think about spending any cash.

Cheers,

Phil.

Phil,

Just going from steel to graphite alone, given the same lengths, will drop the swingweight around 3 points, if not more. That's enough to say it will be quite noticeable.  You might be able to bring the sw back up using a grip that's around 15 grams lighter than the current one you have.  Those are just rough numbers without knowing the steel shaft that's on your clubs right now. That's why generally the graphite version of the same club are typically 1/2" longer.

But before making that switch, can I ask whats making you want to go with graphite? Unless you're finding the clubs very heavy to swing, going to graphite from steel isn't always the best choice, especially if control or accuracy is your main concern.  Mishits tend to be exaggerated with graphite as well.  I'm not saying graphite doesn't have its benefits, but just not always the case.

I guess my reason for graphite is an increase in club head speed and loft for a higher less penetrating flight and soft landing.  The steel shafts are the stock Mizuno ones.  I may be barking up the wrong tree though with graphite, I can hit these clubs okay for the most part but appreciate that nothing will help with a top or catching too much ground before the ball - that is me , I think I am wanting to mitigate the error on the 80% perfect shots if you know what I mean so I can get the ball up higher.

I understand that the main problem is "error between club grip and shoes"  but do think the equipment makes quite a difference on the not quite perfect shots.

I certainly don't want to spend money needlessly so will perservere for now and read people's opinions.

It's a funny game, last week I didn't get to play 18 holes so went to the local 9 hole in the evening, the first is approached from the dogleg bend leaving a downhill walk to the tee, I dropped three balls and using a 5 hybrid casually knocked them 180 downhill to the tee, walked down there popped a tee peg in, waggled, my bum, the club, concentrated  etc. etc. and topped two of the three balls I was hitting back up to the dogleg corner!!!!

For me a typical round of 18 is a couple of pars (maybe one birdie if it's my birthday), about 10 bogeys, 3 double bogeys and then 3 nightmare holes where it all goes wrong and I end up with a 9, 10 or 11.  I need to eliminate the doubles and reduce the nightmares for now.

Dumb game!!! : )

If I remember correctly, the stock steel on the MX Fli Hi are Dynalite Gold, which gives the highest ball flight (or lowest kick point) already.  I'm assuming they're .370 tip.

From how it sounds, I wouldn't go down the road of graphite just yet.  The increase in swing speed on shorter clubs like hybrids only give marginal increases.  I mean, a driver going from steel to graphite is only 4-6 mph, 10 or so yards.  So I would say maybe 3-4 yd gain, at best with that route.  They may also be harder to control or feel the head on the swing.  Kind of a pricely risk to take.

But you do have options.  You can always "step down" on the shafts.  That way, you're pretty much only buying one shaft and new grips if the old ones can't be saved.  What you do is put the 2H shaft on your 3H (then butt trim back to length), 3H shaft goes to the 4H, 4H shaft goes to the 5H.  That leaves you to buy a new shaft, tipped for a 1iron or 1H to go in your 2H.  That should keep the control bit there, but a little more active of a tip to flick the ball higher.  Your local clubmaker should know exactly what to do.

I would suggest either going all steel or have graphite only on the 2 or whatever suits you.  Having a graphite on the 4 but steel on the 2,3,5 sort of throws the scaling off a bit.  Is your 4 the same length as your 3?

    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
