OK, So I've been using my new set of clubs for a few rounds now and thought I would post a review of them. I was able to try them out at a local Academy Sports store and I seemed to really hit it well. After going to the Callaway website and reading about them I decided to order a set. I was able to find the larger 18pc set for $229 shipped by searching google and ebay. Included in the set was.

1,3,5 Woods

4,5 Hybrids

6,7,8,9,PW,SW

Putter

Bag and head covers

I'm average height but left handed so its sometimes hard to try clubs out because they're only in stock in Right Handed. Especially clubs within my price range of $250. I almost bought used but decided this was the best route for me.

The clubs hit great and I am extremely pleased with the driver. It is very forgiving and has what seems to be a huge sweet spot. I first bought a Nike SQ sumo driver that I could not hit well that is since put up now. The fairway woods are my weakness so my opinion on these may be null but I do seem to be getting better contact and am able to get the ball off the ground a little more.

I really like the hybrids too. These are my first to hit and I like how they feel. The sound they make when getting a good hit is very satisfying. I know that sounds stupid but I'm a high handicapper and I feel these clubs are improving my game by the round.

The irons are very forgiving and seem easier to hit. I upgraded from an old set of Macgregor garage sale irons so that could be why I am so happy with them.

As for the putter, I don't like it. I don't like the style and still use the Nike Putter I have. Also the bag is a little cheap looking but will work for a while.

In closing my original thought was to get a used set of irons and fairway woods and keep my Nike driver and putter. While  procrastinating in deciding which used clubs I wanted on ebay and waiting on auctions to close I found these at Academy. I'm glad I did because I hated my Nike driver. I have so much more confidence in my swing and clubs now. I'm really happy with the purchase even though I thought I would be disappointed not having a Brand name set. Sorry its so long.

Given your description, this seems like a nice little beginner set. It appears that you're getting Callaway quality, even if it doesn't expressly say "Callaway" on each club.

Your comment about the hybrids doesn't sound stupid at all. That sound is a form of "feedback," and when you get good feedback from your clubs on a good shot, that's aways confidence building and rewarding.

If it turns out you like the game and you want to go a step further, consider a "wedge set" as your next purchase. Basically, it's three matching blade-style clubs, a gap wedge (=11 iron), a sand wedge to replace your current one (=12 iron), and a lob wedge (=13 iron). I personally love having a wedge set as they give you all sorts of chipping and short-shot options inside 80 yards. And I always found it very hard to chip with a cavity back iron...

My set was under $100... you don't have to get an expensive set to reap the benefits of bladed wedges.

Best of luck to you. Don't get too frustrated now, you hear? :)

    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
