Ok, so I'm trying to find a set of clubs that may be worthwhile to buy. I've tried some regular flex irons and the ball trajectory is super high from the start with them, and I currently play with some tour edge comp lx clubs with "lift-off" stiff shafts rated for 90-100 mph swing speed. They have a more piercing trajectory that gains height.

The question I have is I'm looking at some Tightlies clubs that only come in uniflex and am afraid that the ball flight will be more like the regular flex than the stiff flex and that isn't ideal for me. I also looked at a set of orlimars but they were regular flex or optiflex I can't remember right now. These are full sets with bag and putter. The reason I'm looking at these sets is because right now I don't have a 3 or 5 woods in stiff flex to use so there is a large gap in my game without them. Are these sets worth looking at since my swing speed is obviously in the 90+ mph area?

If you've been playing for a while and you have an 18 HDCP (lower than mine), you are past the boxed sets. Also, you tell us what you want to do, but I sure can't figure out why .

First, why do you want to replace the Tour Edge irons? (... a more piercing trajectory that gains height).

IF the Tight Lies have too soft a flex, why are you looking at them?

I would keep the TE irons, and get a 3W and 5W which you like. Lots of good deals out there on FWs - starting with the price war between TaylorMade and Callaway. Also, the Tour Edge Exotics are a very popular offering.

So, get a couple of FWs - and maybe a hybrid to bridge irons to FWs - and carry on.

Be sure to get launch monitor data on the FWs. And, the standard TST warning: remember that clubhead design is only half the club. The other half is the shaft.

The reason I've been looking at different clubs is because I am very inconsistent with the Tour Edges. If I'm off at all on my contact the distance and accuracy suffers greatly. As such I thought perhaps looking into a game improvement set like the Tightlies 2012 set I saw on sale would be worth looking into. Also, I don't know for certain that the uniflex will be too soft as I have not hit them. I did hit a wilson that had a uniflex and that was too soft. If all companies use the same uniflex shaft then it's an obvious decision. I also have the option of picking up a set of Taylor Made Burner Plus Irons instead, with stiff shaft for only slightly more. Since irons and the putter are what a majority of strokes are made with it seems to reason that investing in a good set of game improvement clubs would benefit me a lot.

I probably am off on my handicap btw. The league I'm in has me rated at 18 but not sure that's accurate. It's probably 20+ as my 9 hole scores are typically 45-55 depending on how many balls I lose in a round rofl.

Here is a picture of a Comp LX iron. You say you want to move to game improvement , but from the looks of the head (undercut cavity, perimeter weighting), LX is GI or maybe even SGI.

So, on your irons, a change of strategy. Get a lesson and find out why your contact is so off. The reason could be:

  • Swing flaws
  • Clubs that don't fit you
  • A combination of the two.

Get your swing tamed first: this will help a lot more right now than buying this and that club, without understanding your swing.

Also, on fairway woods, I defer to solarbear. If you got a 4W and hybrid (both used), you get some longer distance w/o spending tons of $$. You could check out for this season, and maybe upgrade next year. And, be sure to testhit the 4W and H before you buy.

Keep us posted on what happens, JB>

The ones I had may well have been classified as game improvement, however the point is moot now. I was bought Taylormade Burner Plus irons with stiff flex steel shafts today. True enough, though, I did find that there were a couple problems with my set up. I didn't have my hands forward with my irons and my grip was too much in the palm. From the round I played today the iron distances I got were 200yd 6i, 185yd 7i, 150yd 9i, 140yd pw, 120yd aw. Even on miss-hits my distance wasn't affected terribly bad. The main problem I had today, which I didn't realize until the round was over, was my grip was overly strong on my driver leading to a lot of hooked drives which resulted in a several lost balls. Other than that a couple duffed chips and missed putts cost me the usual strokes.

I appreciate the advice. I will probably look at getting a 4 or 5 wood to put in the bag and skip the hybrid. There aren't really any holes I will need anything more than a 5 wood in my area. My drives, when I don't hook the ball, are averaging close to 280 and my 4i should go about 220-230 which will put me on in 2 for just about every par 5 I'll see.

    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
