I am new to the sport and just beginning to learn.  I currently have a few inherited clubs and have been reading up on hybrids since they did not exist last time I swung a club 25+ years ago.  I'm sure my better option is to wait a while and work into it, but I would like to pick up a few hybrids to throw in the bag to get started with.

I have found some good deals on the Cleveland Mashie (and Mashie plus) for $30 - 50 each and wandered what everyone thought about them as a beginner hybrid.  I know they aren't a Titleist but are they appropriate for a first time ball striker?

How do they work from the rough and/or tee?

Are these played and struck just like irons as far as striking down and not up on the ball?

Thanks for any insight.

In my  Superlight 3.5 Dlx bag:

Warrior Custom Golf driver 11.0*

Warrior Custom Golf 3W 15*

:cleve: Mashie+ M3 [Miyazaki C. Kua 59 R]

 Eye2 4-PW [zz-lite]

Warrior Custom Golf wedges (56* & 60*)

 HPC w/ SuperStroke grip (33.75")

Bag under constant development due to available funding.  Warrior clubs inherited and temporary.

I can't vouch for the Mashies, but I have a Cleveland Halo hybrid and it's one of my favorite clubs, so don't rule out Cleveland because it "isn't Titliest".

They were great from the rough, fairway, or tee. And people strike them differently. But with me, it's more of an iron type swing, but without a divot.

The Internet Adjustment Formula:
IAD = ( [ADD] * .96 + [EPS] * [1/.12] ) / (1.15)

IAD = Internet Adjusted Distance (in yards)
ADD = Actual Driver Distance (in yards)
EPS = E-Penis Size (in inches)

My other consideration is a used Ping G15 hybrid.  They run a little more but I do currently use Ping irons.  I don't know if the G15s would be a better option since they may more closely match my current Ping irons in swing.  I know they have an offset but so do the Eye2s.

Looks aside, how are the G15 hybrids?

    • Day 299: played 18. Hit the ball well, but did not score well. I think I ended up +10, with half of that coming on 2 holes.
    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
