Well, i have heard the famous Mark Crossfield of England state that when hitting the golf ball off the turf, the ball must overcome more frictive resistance, compared to sitting on a peg.  Can you imagine your ball sitting in a pool of Silly Putty or similar sticky stuff. To achieve the normal result you must apply more clubhead speed to overcome more ball gripping  friction which is preventing the ball from moving. Makes sense to me. So when on the tee any peg which offer the least friction to ball movement is best. And i would suggest that 3 straight pins or sewing needles inserted into a wooden holder and set on the turf would be about the least possible. Your mileage may vary.

I was thinking along the same line Joe - a thinner trunk tee with smaller head should result in less resistance when the shot is taken and hence extra yardage.

What I think : As long as the ball is hit with a positive angle of attack the ball is gone from the tee with no resistance and before the club head impacts the tee. Differences in distances because of tees would be minimal.

What I know : I lose much more distance from my inability to consistently hit the sweet spot than anything to do with any tee.

Only if the difference in friction is so much as to significantly impact ball speed.

They work great, at exactly what they're intended to do....

.....separate a golfer from his money!

But that's all.

This is the only post necessary in this thread. :smartass:

The trouble with that theory is that the differences in friction between the worst and the best legal tee is infinitesimal, insignificant, and irrelevant to the length of a drive.  There simply isn't enough additional contact with the tee to matter.

Maybe the Mythbusters should put this one to the test.

This is one of those science fair things. You might be able to measure slightly less spin with top-rated physics equipment, but I don't know if it would deliver but a couple of more yards.

This would be a good test for the Discovery channel's Myth-Busters.

I use the "4 more yards" tee.  They don't give me any more distance. I use them because they are very flexible and I've never broken one.

My club supplies free tees but they are cheap and break on every drive. got tired of having to carry a pocket of tees and what a waste.

I also carry a shorty solid plastic tee for use on par threes.   Only two tees I've used for three months.   Three times a week.
