First time post. Looking for help! I have been playing golf since I was approximately 10 & am now 41. I am currently a 13.3 index. I play 2-3x a week. My lowest hdcpt was a 9 about 10 years ago. I am so frustrated with my game I decided this year I would buy new irons after having my old set 8 years. Went to Golf Etc. & was fit. Picked out Mizuno JPX 825 Pros in the 4-7; MP59 in the 8-GW & reshafted my driver, 3 wood & hybrid. Played all year with ZERO improvement. Golf Etc. guy is seeing me Friday in an attempt to determine what is wrong (Indian or arrow). Anyone else get cusom fit & feel you play worse? I wonder if fitting was not done properly? Guess I was expecting to see some improvement. My goal was to get down to a 10 by now. GIR & fairways are worse this year than last. Thank you for any help figuring out how to get back to having fun playing & shooting 77-83 consistently.

Buy some sort of yardage device - garmin watch for example, You are lacking in scoring situations, your distances are off.  since you didn't say anything about putting &  your drive was all over the place.  The assumption I can make is you are not hitting greens in regulation period. There are some greens that pins should be avoided and yet other greens where you can go for the pin.  They'll be some pins that a shot behind the hole is a better and safer putt. Focus on the green and not just between you and the hole.

Look at the greens prior to your approach shot and ask yourself 2 questions. Where do I want to putt from? and Where do I want to miss? Next play a round at your course and swing a touch easier with the next club up. If you "think" you are dialed in with a 7 iron for 150 yards, then begin swinging a 6 iron and choke down a 1/4-1/2 inch. 11-15 handicappers  have one thing in common they come up short on their approach shots. Choking a club, not enough and swinging too hard likely is the culprit. Use the extra club on all Par threes!

Goal: get the ball on the green and 2 putt, more pars, less bogies = lower handicap

Thank you for some things to think about. Fairways hit average is 24%. GIR 17% & putts 30.9. Drive in trouble & then can not recover, but even if I hit the fairway finding the GIR is a struggle. Too many doubles. I use a GPS yardage app on my phone.

Do you hit the ball in the center of the face more often, the same or less often?  Assuming your swing has basically stayed the same.

If you got statically fit, which is a compilation of physical measurements like height, wrist to floor, hand size and longest finger, got your lie angles checked and measured your swing speed, then there isn't that much more a fitter could do.  I would also recommend checking your lie angles with a sharpie line on the ball

Hey, I keep all my scorecards from practice rounds and other. Before I got fitted I was in the 85-95 range using off-the-shelf irons. One day I went and got fitted.  I played fitted clubs 2 sets for 2 years (80 rounds) and never shot below 90. Picked up some old clubs(irons) from my Ex that were off-the-shelf. ..shot an 88, Bought a closeout set from Amazon and shot an 84... And have been doing better since then. But..I am still using fitted drivers, wedges and putters...My approach shots were my weak link, and I have fixed that.

There are different things called "a fitting". Some fitters are more skilled than others and some put much more time and effort into it than others.

None have a magic club that is going to fix a major swing flaw or flaws. If there were I would be looking for them.

They can only give us the tools to have our best shot at any success.

Yeah, about ready to re-grip some old Titleist DCI offset irons that have been sitting around in my basement over 12 years & playing with them to see what happens. Scored quite a few times in the 70's with those clubs.

as a fitter you are correct, but one commonality of a properly fitted club is a repetitive swing- or at least a close resemblance of one. The fact that the original poster had a handicap of a 9 is a pretty good indicator of a repetitive swing, since he didn't indicate he was 6'3" or 5 3" for that matter, lie angle off a lie board, flex, shaft material for irons can be handled by most fitters. I can look at your swing plane, geometry, grip and ball flight and conclude similar results. Nothing will be perfect for the 10-16 handicapper, but for that matter nothing can be so terrible off the rack either.  The MP59 in the scoring irons and the JPX in the longer irons could be a little over thinking for a mid handicapper. My experience has been with mixed sets in nature seem to be common on much more lower single handicap players.- but not all.  Perhaps a full  consistent set of the JPX, rocket blades, type irons may have helped matters.  the jpx has a lighter shaft than the scoring irons, I believe they maybe a touch longer and stronger loft. I could be wrong though

I could be wrong though I believe I have a repetitive swing, but not perfect, otherwise I would not be a 15 :) I am 5'8" & 165 lbs. I purchased irons in Dynamic Gold XPR 300 standard length. Lie angle 59 & 2 degrees flat. Optimizer summary: head speed:76; tempo:4; tow down:3; kick angle:8; release factor:8. My interpretation of purchasing irons after/during a fitting was pick a club I like & what feels good & results will be mostly based on shaft I put on that head & the results from computer data. Appreciate all responses on trying to figure out how to score better & be more consistent.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
