I don't think it is a myth. It has happened often enough that it is probably true. I have slightly mixed feelings about it. On principle, I wish it would be stopped, except maybe if the "viewer" that calls in is an official or in someway actually connected to the tournament in progress. The mixed feelings come in when something happens like the Dyson situation, where he has allegedly been doing questionable things for a while, and a little "Karma" comes 'round.

      Its not. They are just giving an example in a situation say if cant reach it. Example, You have 230 to the center of the green, you cant hit a club you have that far, so you whip out a 3/5 wood or whatever, but you have to hit it soft because there is trouble in front of the green, a bunker or water. A full swing would land you in the trouble. You want to lay up as close to the green as you can. So you aren't hitting a full shot with that club so for distance tracking you can make that shot a provisional and it wont affect the distance stats.

      I had a 5 wood.  Now have moved onto hybrids and have a 4 hybrid.  As I get older a more lofted hybrid and/or 7 and 9 woods will come into my bag.  I have learnt that as swing speed declines, loft is your friend
